Maybe you all know this already but twitter allowed academics who are otherwise marginalised by white, male hieracrchies to enjoy reach and visibility. (Yes, I count myself as a beneficiary here).

For many who have 'odd' names that don't get cited as much, or people who cannot travel to present talks easily, or are not invited as often or speak in unfamiliar accents, it was a chance to let their work and message speak for itself.

We'll need to reclaim that possibility for everyone. #Academic

Eliminate all decision-making from meetings, and both the decision-making AND the meetings will get way better!

The problem: Decision-making in meetings is a practice from the realm of command-and-control. In #democratic, collaborative contexts, meetings should serve #discourse (or "earnest #conversation") - the decisions should be made AFTERWARDS. Not by bosses, of course, but by individuals who are fittest to make them.

It's okay to say 'I don't know', particularly if you don't know.

As more academics reach Fedi, please PLEASE consider not doing research on users here without explicit opt-in consent

This isn't a zoo

It's not just condescending for you to treat us that way, it's also against a lot of instances' terms of use

See "Use of Scholar Social for research" at the following link for an example:

it's funny/interesting that mastodon uses "favorites" instead of "likes". It makes me want to use the feature more sparingly.

A few folks have asked for tips on #Mastodon so here goes:

- Use hashtags. It helps to connect with interesting people who have similar interests. (ex. I found fellow #science themed bakers!)

- Mastodon isn’t #Twitter & there’s more to social media than outrage & doomscrolling. Cross posts from the birdsite & RTs look odd.

- Don’t worry about follower counts. Tailor the experience to what you want to see.

- Share what you’re passionate about! That’s why so many of us are enjoying it here.

Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.
Lastly, if you're an academic in any field, there are numerous lists of scholars at this point to help you find your colleagues. Thanks to @hendrikerz for helping to aggregate them. https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon

Currently Masto.host is experiencing the highest volume of traffic that has ever reached the infrastructure.

The service is partially degraded and I will be doing fast upgrades on the platform.

These can lead to partial downtime, errors and large delays in support requests.

Really sorry. Doing the best I can on my end. Hope you understand. Thanks.
