I put the air-layered Santa Rosa plum in the ground this evening. I pulled the big forsythia out this morning with a lot of rope and a big come-a-long, cut the root ball off with the chain saw, dragged off the brush, washed the dirt out the root ball and dragged it off, chopped out some more roots, hoed it up, raked it out, planted the plum.

It had lots of new roots filling up the pot and has been growing fast.

The Santa Rosa plum air layering has made roots! It's been 11 weeks since it was started. It should make a standard sized tree if it survives. I put it in a pot for now so I can be kept wet and out of the hot sun if necessary and figure out where I want to plant it.

An air layering attempt on the old Santa Rosa plum. Harvested the sphagnum moss from the rock seen in the background. Now we wait.

Yes, I could just buy another Santa Rosa plum but then it's not THIS plum. This also ignores the fact that the chances of getting the same plum is near zero because "looks like" is more important than "actually is" in the buy a plant world these days.

Today is one day...

Around Xmas 2024, I started an air layer on an old #pomegranate in our front yard. I didn't really want to remove it today, given the hot, windy conditions, but I have had to balance the survival of the layer against getting it off the parent tree before autumn leaf-fall, so that it might establish itself a little before winter.

Anyway, here it is:
