A brilliant new paper in #ResearchEvaluation 📄 compares how the UK, Norway, and Poland implemented research impact assessment - with very different results:

🇬🇧 UK built infrastructure, #REF became a strategic tool.
🇳🇴 Norway took a soft, formative approach.
🇵🇱 Poland copy-pasted, spent big - got confusion, “point-chasing” and no culture shift.

🇺🇦 A lesson Ukraine risks ignoring again.

Beyond Accreditation: Transforming Mental Health Culture in Higher Education

Faculty and staff are the backbone of academic institutions, yet their mental health is often sidelined by a culture that perpetuates a cycle of stress and silence. To dismantle this, we must first…

One of the most frustrating words to read in an #ethnography, especially an ethnography about #corporateexploitation and anti-#hegemonic resistance, is the word "unfathomable." It, often combined with "ambiguous," positively screams for continuance of authoritarian status quo, even if surrounded by words like "#colonial" and "injury." #socialmovements #anthropology #humangeography #imperialism #postmodern #actornetwork #latour #academicculture
I receive no responses on a little over half of my requests, and have also received responses within 30 minutes of my email. I have had many academics say that their fellow academics always love to share. The reality is that a minority of academics is interested in sharing especially with non-eminent citizenry. This is also why #scihub problems are so consequential. https://twitter.com/hisotalus/status/1602266282908336131

“A few weeks ago I e-mailed someone to ask if I could get a copy of an article they wrote that is behind a paywall. In a first, they have e-mailed back now (ages later) and suggested I should pay for it like everyone else. EXCUSE ME?!”

… and perhaps occasionally be mindful of the fact that you are not inviting people from groups that are over represented to give up their time like this. Speaking about and advocating for a better #AcademicCulture can make colleagues (senior and junior) think we’re less serious about our scientific research. If it’s during the day, we’ve got to make up that lab time somewhere else in the week. And on top of that, you don’t even bother to email to say thanks. 🥲 #ScienceMastodon
Like most #WomenInSTEM, I get a lot of requests to do talks/workshops about #AcademicCulture and #Inclusivity. Preparing and delivering these is exhausting and emotionally draining, and can impact on lab and teaching time. I have a salary and would feel uncomfortable taking a fee, but it’s really crushing when the people who invite you don’t message to say thanks. Please, please thank your speakers. #ScienceMastodon
Things I didn’t like about Twitter: relentless self-publicity (without amplifying others), endless platitudes about #AcademicCulture, or performative demonstrations of a commitment to #diversity. It celebrated people who were good at shouting loudly and repeating other people’s experiences as their own rather than championing people doing meaningful work.

Here's my #introduction!

Assistant Professor of #Economics at Western Washington University, Ohio State before that. I conduct research on ag + food systems + teach classes on enviro + resources. I care a lot about #inclusivity + #equity in our society + the profession.

I left Twitter for good + hope we migrate only the best parts to Mastodon.

As long as I'm here, expect occasional toots about econ of ag, #FoodSystems, #environment + resources plus #AcademicCulture, #mentorship, + #pedagogy.
