Santa Fe locomotive, Trinidad, Colorado. July 1986. Scanned from a 35mm Kodachrome slide.

In 1984, the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads announced they would merge. In anticipation they each began repainting locomotives in this new "Kodachrome" scheme that combined Santa Fe's design with Southern Pacific's colors. Just days before this photo was taken, the Interstate Commerce Commission voted to kill the merger.
