Southern Pacific (SP) SD7 2716 was sporting improvised extended sunshades to protect from the early summer heat in Roseville, CA on Sunday, June 28, 1973. It was doubling over an eastbound train that was led by UP power.

SP 2716 was an EMD SD7, SP Class ES615-3. Reportedly: it was built as SP 5309, SP Class DF-117, in 1953, construction number 18381, the first of it's class, and was built with 62:15 gearing, steam generators and signal lights at each end. Renumbered to 2716 in the 1965 renumbering, it was renumbered again to 1416 in 1973. SP 1416 was upgraded in 1979 to SP Class ES615R-1 1511. SP 1511 was retired and sold in 1995.

Southern Pacific (SP) SW1500 2630 led a motley assortment of SP motive power including GP9E 3384, two SD45T-2’s and two Alco S6’s at Newhall Yard in Santa Clara, California. According to Wesley Fox this is the OASJY, on Monday, February 10, 1975.
SP 2630 was an SW1500, SP Class ES415-5. Reportedly: it was built in 1972, serial 4608-40. Retired in 1994. Sold to Omni-Trax became CTI Bank Leasing CEFX 2630.

UP EMD/MK/Sulzer SD45M
This was shot at Summit, CA, on Cajon Pass, on a trip in the early 80's (likely 1982) to Eagle Mountain. It is a pure luck shot of a UP Sulzer on the point of a train at Summit. The man getting off is a (surprise) mechanic.
UP 60 was an EMD SD45, UP Designation EMD/Morrison Knudsen SD45M. Reportedly, it was built in 1968 by EMD as UP 3634 an SD45, builders number 33443, from UP series 3600-3649. It was renumbered UP 34 in 1978. It was rebuilt in 1980, equipped with a Sulzer 16ASV25R-30 engine and 62:15 gear ratio. Union Pacific called these units SD45Ms. Morrison Knudsen used TE83-6S. It was retired in 1983.

At 7:41 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, then new BNSF 6581, 6583, 5136, 4009, 5604 and 5035 led a southbound manifest out of Caliente, CA. They were approaching Tunnel 1 in the Tehachapi mountains.
BNSF 6581 is a GE ES44C4. Reportedly: it was built in 2013, serial number 61494.

At 8:38 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Barstow, CA, BNSF 5261 was leading a 4+0 (5261, 4342, 4320, 5430) eastbound intermodal train onto the Needles Subdivision. Behind it a westbound 5+0 (BNSF 6836, 4014, NS 2583, 724wb, 960) manifest was heading in the other direction.
BNSF 5261 is a GE C44-9W. Reportedly: it was built in 2002 serial number 53755.

At 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Barstow, CA, near where East Tower once was, an eastbound BNSF Auto Racks (6778, 7501) started it's journey onto the Needles Subdivision.
BNSF 6778 is a GE ES44C4. Reportedly: it was built in 2011 builder's number 60448.

On Saturday, January 10, 2026, my BN 4369 (SP&S) led a train in the canyon while high above a daylight train headed in the other direction at the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC) in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA. My BN 4369 is an HO Bowser model.
The real BN 4369 was an ALCo C636. Reportedly: it was built in 1968, builders number 6010-04, as SP&S 343. After the merger it became BN 4369. It was retired circa 1980.
