"In #TikTok videos viewed tens of thousands of times, 31-year-old #DanSheena dons a blond wig and acts out skits of a bickering #Iraqi couple in a #language that is nearly extinct: #Judeo-#Arabic.

#Sheena began posting videos on TikTok in 2023, speaking the endangered language, which today is rarely spoken by anyone under the age of 60, following the mass exodus of #Jews from #Arab countries due to discrimination and religious persecution.

Raised by two parents from #Baghdad, Sheena grew up in #Israel and spoke the language at home. That’s a rarity among second- and third-generation Iraqi Jews, whose families often stopped passing it down in an effort to assimilate.

From a young age, Sheena, who still lives in Israel, knew he wanted to become an Arabic teacher. After years of teaching conversational Arabic in the public school system, he became determined to preserve the dialect he grew up with.

When Sheena told his family that he wanted to teach #JudeoArabic..."

“MET POLICE FAILED TO FOLLOW INTERNAL GUIDELINES ON POLICING PALESTINE PROTESTS”

“It’s a legal right in the UK to criticise the government’s decision to ban a group and to call for de-proscription.

The MPS [Metropolitan Police Service] acknowledged this in its internal guidance from last July, the same document which says that holding a sign calling for de-proscription alone does not suggest membership of a proscribed organisation and that individuals have to actively express support for a proscribed group for this to be an offence.

The force has nevertheless repeatedly prevented protesters from exercising these rights, although it’s unclear just how many have been arrested for this”

Met police failed to follow internal guidelines on policing Palestine protests

Internal guidances also show the force cracking down on Arabic words in a way that ‘smacks’ of racism, say pro-Palestinian advocates

I was texting a photo of my newly cleaned up and sorted bookshelf to my Arabic-speaking friend in Montreal and this book jumped out at him and he was asking me about it.
يا ليل يا عين
it's a phrase "O night, O eye" that he was saying appears in many slow, lyrical old Arabic songs but that he never knew the origin of. he was googling it and found several competing folk etymologies of it, none of which convinced him ...

this book is cool, only in French sadly

#Arabic word for "to knit" is the same as "to complicate". Make of that what you will. :)

"A few years ago, in response to a #Palestinian critic who made a disparaging remark about the fact that I don’t speak #Arabic, I felt compelled to write an article explaining why that is the case. I said that under different circumstances, I could have been born in an #Arab country and grown up speaking Arabic. My father’s family had been settled in #Iraq for generations, but they fled to #England in 1941—the same year that #Baghdad’s #Jews were convulsed by a June #pogrom known as the #farhud—presaging a much larger exodus of Iraqi Jews over the next decade.

Among my father and his relatives, there was little nostalgia for the old country, and therefore no reason, as they saw it, to ensure that their children born outside Iraq learned Arabic. It’s not that they didn’t appreciate the centrality of Iraq to #Jewish history..."
