#fossilfriday 🐱☠️ Sabretooth cats roamed the Midwest! Information released by Iowa State University describes a sub-adult male Smilodon fatalis skull found on the East Ninshnabotna River near Shenandoah Iowa.

Researchers used radiocarbon dating to age the Iowa cat to ~13,500 years. The find adds to a total of only about 70 specimens found across the country (other than La Brea) and a 1st in Iowa.

It’s #Minnesota #MammalMonday! 🐴πŸͺ🦣πŸ¦₯πŸƒ You could say horses made America – feeding the American big cats during the Pleistocene and then propelling humans into the modern age.

This decrepit skull from Bannack, Montana, and butchered tibia found in New Ulm, Minnesota highlight both the modern mystique and the utility of the horse. 🐎

Happy #Minnesota #FossilFriday! πŸ¦¬πŸƒπŸ¦£πŸͺπŸ¦₯ Here is a beefy Bison bison humerus found last fall by a friend of mine in Southern Minnesota. It was found eroding out of the side of a small tributary about 4 feet below the soil surface – just downhill from a tee box on a local golf course. β›³

It has since been donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota for further study.

It's #Minnesota #MammothMonday. 🦣🦷 More Southern Minnesota proboscideans! - see my previous #MammothMonday posts. Here's a partial tooth found in 2019 by a friend. It was stuck in the muddy river bottom along a cut bank. Surprisingly not fully tumbled apart - the rest of the animal could be close! Donated to the #sciencemuseumofmn. 🦣πŸ¦₯🐴πŸͺπŸ¦¬πŸƒ

#SeptarianSunday! πŸ’Ž 🦣πŸ¦₯ Sometimes when out fossil hunting I also come across the occasional sedimentary anomaly. This septarian nodule was found along the Crow River in central Minnesota on a gravel bar. It is very loosely formed but I β€˜dig’ it! πŸ¦¬πŸ‚πŸ¦«

🐴 Happy #Minnesota #FossilFriday! The next year of the horse isn't until 2026 but the last couple of years have uncovered many horse specimens for me and a fellow fossil hunter. Horse specimens for us are second only to Bison bison finds. One of these teeth, if verified, will be the first Pleistocene horse documented in Minnesota!
