First Light is our video game club pick this month. I rarely play high budget AAA games, so it's always funny how simultaneously both smooth and janky they can be.
On the smooth side, I can see the content budget, where there's so much detail on every little table and desk and room. There's a drive in a jeep with a carefully crafted environment that we'll never see or use again. The mechanics tutorial is presented as a well-polished training montage sequence.
But also, the initial janky experience of starting this game is:
- wait for infinitely long game download
- wait for compiling shaders that takes just as long
- read and accept this mandatory thirty page end user license agreement to play our game
- also read and accept this twenty page privacy policy or else you will be forced to """play offline"""
- try to understand what "offline" vs "online" mode means for a single player game by searching the internet
- main menu keeps trying to advertise deluxe edition upgrades and """going online"""
