Temporal is cool.

PlainYearMonth is weird though.

PlainYearMonth is Weird

Temporal finally reached Stage 4, which is cool and amazing. I'll write about the cool stuff later. For now I'm going to complain about some weirdness that I'm seeing.

@SaraSoueidan forms because of how many fields need to be handled custom, and how badly designed the native APIs are.

Do you still use `z-index: 9999`? There's a better way:

It only took me about a decade to write this up, and in that time what I consider to be "best practice" changed at least twice.

Now you have no more excuse for enormously huge `z-index` values.

How to Manage z-indexes

If you've ever needed to stack things in CSS, it's likely that you've seen z-index values over 9000. This strategy for managing stacking order is based on hoping that it will work. Fortunately, I know of a better approach.

@chriscoyier

I finally got around to writing my blog post about managing z-indexes:

@zachleat

for a moment I thought you'd somehow brought back HyperCard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperCard) as a web component

@sarajw it sounds like you haven't heard of the Social Contract of Tolerance: those who don't abide by the terms of the contact are not covered by it.

I like that framing because it entirely removes the paradox.

@annaecook get a woobles kit

They're really beginner friendly and have helpful videos to walk you through the basics.

inside out because that's analogous to the top to bottom stacking that we see visually.

Ideally there'd be a way to also make borders stack visually so that we can mix colors, but that seems like a relatively unnecessary use case because we could do the color blending ourselves.

@aardrian before inert and <dialog> there was a time when the "bookends focus" technique was the most reliable way to prevent accessing content outside of modals, and the tradeoff was that it was a focus trap, so you had to make sure that the modal could be cancelled/closed to pass 2.1.2.

Not exactly a good choice as much as a least bad option given the constraints. Maybe there were even better approaches to handling modals at the time (other than not using modals).

Hi, Mastodon 🦣 could you help me out?

Could you let me know what this looks like for you in various browser engines (esp. Blink)?

If the p3 box at the top turns green-ish & says supported, could you also send screens? Got no idea how I could emulate what you see.

First screenshot is what I see in Firefox & Epiphany, second what I see in Chrome.

Boosts appreciated.

Thanks! 🙏
