Hey folks - I'm looking for some recommendations for #Homelab #networking. Previously used a Ubiquiti Dream Machine but for reasons I won't go into, I'm no longer going to be using those.
Currently tinkering with the idea of a PFSense/Opnsense box with some APs from somewhere else, or alternatively, some Mikrotik gear.
All suggestions welcome, please boost for visibility!

I'm grateful to the mastodon core team for maintaining mastodon.social but there's an ocean of smaller instances out there. At least one where I have some friends has publicly announced plans to defederate with mastodon.social and I don't want to lose those connections.
Hey! Weirder.earth will be defederating from mastodon.social and mastodon.online soon - in a week - due to problematic moderation on those instances. Alas. When that happens, we won't be able to see each other's stuff.
Are you able to move to a smaller instance? Smaller servers are cool. Be on a smaller server. Be cool.

Why? 
Mastodon is a bunch of islands that can talk to each other. The smaller and more spread out we are, the easier things are to moderate. Horizontal scaling FTW!
All of you who fled that one site 🐤 ended up at mastodon.social for likely a few reasons. It was obvious, it was big, and it's where you saw a bunch of folks going.
But it has a long history of being poorly moderated, which means a LOT of instances are silencing or blocking it. Which means you're on the big island that SEEMS like it's "where everyone is", but in fact, it's a giant island unto itself (momentarily trending toward turning into a post-bird-site echo chamber), and huge swaths of the Fediverse don't talk to it, or even see it.
If you want the quality of interaction (and moderation!) Mastodon is known for, move thy funky buns to a smaller instance of cool folks you enjoy.
