My counter tells me that I have just passed 20,000 followers here on Mastodon. Thank you for following me here, I hope I am making your Mastodon experience better. To celebrate this Round Number Milestone, I have donated $200 to RIP Medical Debt, which buys and then pays off medical debt in the US, for pennies on the dollar. $200 pays off $20K in medical debt, so that's $1 of medical debt wiped out for each of my followers here. It's a good way for me to say "thank you."

I think one underappreciated thing that's happening with ChatGPT is that it's reminding people of how joyful it is to do totally mundane searches, i.e. looking up recipes, and *not* get indundated with a million fucking ads.
We’re just reinventing it from the grassroots once again. Clients like Ice Cubes and Ivory show previews of Mastodon posts when you include the URL in your quote post. It’s already happening and Mastodon’s official web interface will have to catch up. They lost their chance to define the quote-post on Mastodon by refusing to do it all for highly dubious “safety” reasons. https://mastodon.social/@film_girl/109759044241043089
One of the worst developments in the internet was the point that every single action I took online began to generate an email asking me to "rate" the experience

Just saw the first ad of the new year on the bird sight (took a beak this weekend!). It’s an ad for a betting site for football (soccer). I have never seen a sports betting ad there before, and I live in the us and I’ve never watched football in my life! (Personal failing I’m sure).

The takeaways:

1) bird site is not getting nearly as much high quality advertiser as customers
2) the ad algorithms are crap, or produce so few potential views they can’t use them

Andrew Tate getting so mad at Greta Thornberg that he accidentally doxxes himself to the Romanian authorities and gets arrested on outstanding human trafficking charges might - just possibly - be peak 2022.
See, Matt Gaetz would have told Andrew Tate that those teen girls are nothing but trouble.

UPDATE: During the 15-minute recess before this ruling was issued, the Cochise County supervisors' lawyer — who was not present at the hearing — filed a motion to move the court proceedings from state court to a federal district court...that doesn't exist: https://www.democracydocket.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/2022.12.01-Notice-of-Removal.pdf https://twitter.com/DemocracyDocket/status/1598427094572220416

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.
