Unfortunately, I don't think there is another way. I would love to be a pacifist, but it's just not realistic in this world we live in.
We need to come together as Europe, forge the best democratic alliance we can, and project our power, so that tyrants such as Putin and Trump can't just waltz in and trample the rights of European citizens.
Of course we shouldn't get into the business of exploiting anyone, but that's why we make laws.
