The American system of democracy has crashed

The right-wing Supreme Court only believes in letting the strong trample weak. These originalists should probably read the Declaration of Independence.

We live in an age of miracle and wonder, but it's mostly owned by someone else with questionable judgment.

I know that Stephen Miller gets a lot of hate on here, but hear me out.

I think we could hate him more. We have the capacity, we all just need to put in a little more effort.

I wish I could say I'm shocked about today's budget news. But I'm not. I've known how horrible it was for weeks. And I've unfortunately assumed it would pass. None of the safe guards are working. The US as we knew it is over.

The question now is do we let the crazies define our new world as a dystopian hellscape, or will the people push back and say no? How much more do the American people need to see before they wake up from their jaded apathy?

AOC: “I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.”

People are shocked to discover they need to fact-check ChatGPT and I'm having the uncomfortable realization that they never fact-checked their uncle's Facebook posts, their friend's medical advice, or literally anything Google's top result told them, and suddenly the last decade makes sense...

An iPhone app called ICEBlock, which allows anyone to lawfully and anonymously report ICE sightings and get notified about nearby ICE agents, went viral overnight after criticism from the US Attorney General.

FYI: The app doesn't collect or store user data. (I checked by doing a network traffic analysis of the app.)

Hello Fedi friends!

My decision to upload the Fedi promo video to YouTube 2 weeks ago was really controversial.

@randahl posted a nice message about the video & encouraged his followers to like / comment on it so the YouTube algorithm would serve it to more people. He was inundated by hostile comments for days. Sorry Randahl!

Well, exhibit A of why this was a good decision in hindsight (see pic).

How else are people going to hear about the Fediverse?

As always, thanks for the support ❤️

@_elena @randahl it's no good preaching to the already converted. Where do these zealots believe non-fedi people are going to see the video?

#SMH

@skribe @_elena @randahl Some people seem to think that if another person wasn't just born having the same opinion as them then they're broken or something and there's no need to convince them, they should already know.

I figure they should already know that's stupid as hell and don't worry about it.

@skribe @_elena @randahl it’s weird that people didn’t think this by default. I realized that since I’m not using nonfederated social media that I effectively have to way to reach everyone else.
@_elena @randahl I find it's great to post things on the central platforms as long as it's a few things;
1. A few days / hours late (and you say you can find it quicker on here)
2. It's pure promo content for the Fediverse and what we do on here, Like you said "How else are people meant to know about it"

There's probably a few other reasons such as being a business makes sense, but adopting the Fedi First Goal is a good idea for people who NEED to use these other platforms.
@sam @randahl absolutely. that's why I made the video premiere on my self-hosted PeerTube and only uploaded to YouTube 8 days (or more?) later... encouraged by my savvy interns
@_elena @sam @randahl i dont know how works YouTube. But maybe an advertising video on YouTube promoting you full video on peertube/mastodon like a link "see more" could be great no? This could makes you visible on YouTube but "convert" only interested users by using instantly the new platform.
This is what I do. I publish to open places first and use places like YouTube as just free backup storage I know will eventually go down or shut down, which is fine by me. I'm just syndicating my stuff to you! My main hub will always get it first. @sam @_elena @randahl
@Samantha Xavia I would add one more use case. Use the centralized platforms to promote your content on the decentralized platform. You can post promotional videos or posts or short form content, but if they want to see your full length stuff, they need to visit your website or view it on PeerTube, for example.

This is similar to how many content creators post a shorter version of their videos on YouTube, but then tell them if they want to see the full length video, they need to go to their website, or Patreon, or Curiosity Stream. We can follow the same concept, but send them to PeerTube or our website that embeds PeerTube videos.
@_elena awesome vidéo, awesome work ❤️
Cc @randahl
@_elena @randahl sorry to hear that some people still don’t get it. Thanks for your fantastic work in promoting the Fediverse
@_elena I wonder why this would be controversial... how else would you reach people outside of the Fediverse besides sharing it on Social Media platforms that aren't the Fediverse?
And YouTube is clearly one of them, just with the difference that you share videos there.
There should just be a link to the Peertube video or other ways to access the Fediverse in the description imho
@leberschnitzel thanks for the suggestion. Links don't work on my YouTube profile... Google is asking me to upload a photo ID for verification to make links work. WTF. I'm not doing that...
@_elena even in the video description?

@leberschnitzel YUP.

And I just looked it up on YouTube and noticed there's a pre-roll ad for Disney WTFFFFFF. I am NOT monetizing this video

@_elena google stopped giving you the choice to monetize some years ago, if you're not a partner or something.

@_elena You're not.

They are.

YT now sticks ads in every single video, pretty much.

Which is why one is always armed with an ad blocker.

@leberschnitzel

I agree you should say no to such a request.

@_elena @randahl

That's so disappointing to hear. Sorry you had a bad experience.

No one should be attacking you for raising awareness for the open social web outside of its current shape. Like you said, how else would we grow this space?

We've experienced similar things in the past, so if you ever want advise (or to rant), the Newsmast team will always be a happy ear.

Now going to leave a positive comment on the video 🧡

@newsmast @randahl aw thank you! I didn't mind, I just felt bad for Randahl who was on the receiving end of so much vitriol.

The worst is that people kept saying "why isn't this video on PeerTube" and after 20 times of replying all in caps IT PREMIERED ON MY SELF-HOSTED PEERTUBE, I sort of gave up 😅

@_elena don't worry about me. I got battle hardened by fighting the far right on immigration in the Danish media, so these Mastodon comments felt like a mild breeze.
I am just glad your video did so well — 19000 views is 19000 potential new users. You and your friends have every reason to celebrate such an awesome success.
@newsmast

@randahl aw thanks Randahl. I got all worked up while reading them because of how wrong they were (re: PeerTube). A mild breeze albeit annoying 😅

@newsmast

@_elena you should be able to "pin" a comment on YT. This way you could highlight your comment explaining something asked often or the one with the PeerTube-link.

Or is this feature also only available after verification?

@newsmast @randahl

@jill thank you Jill, I'll try.

I got a message from YouTube saying that in order to enable links I need to send them my picture ID. I didn't want to do that. But I'll try pinning some comments - didn't know about this 😅

@newsmast @randahl

@_elena Yeah, I read about the ID bs earlier. That`s why I suggested pinning. Hopefully it works, otherwise ppl just have to scroll a little. Shouldn't be that hard. 😁

@newsmast @randahl

@jill @newsmast @randahl fun fact: if you want to pin comments to YouTube you need biometric / ID verification 😒

@_elena @newsmast @randahl this makes absolutely no sens! Next step they will force you to a subscription in order to have these basic features enabled. 😠

I am not against paying for services! Only if they still show you ads and keep using you/your content for making money/serving ads. That's just bs. imho

@jill I'm really creeped out by the notion of giving them my facial biometrics for this. It makes ZERO sense.

I just want to enable hyperlinks and pin messages.

If they were serious about verification, they'd propose other ways (more privacy friendly)

@_elena @newsmast @randahl
Please excuse my ignorance but couldn't you just write the link to the PeerTube-video directly in the video description? I did look but saw only a link to your blog. Not saying it'll make people stop asking but, you know... 😄

@sebulon yeah sadly links don’t work on my YouTube because a government ID or biometrics are required to turn them on.

I included the link to my blog because the direct link to PeerTube is super long and filled with letters/numbers 😓

@newsmast @randahl

@_elena @newsmast @randahl
Yeah I read that, sucks! Well if you change your mind, people could just copy and paste it like I suspect most people do anyway with the address to your blog 🤷
@_elena @randahl I'm totally agree with you, we have to put our feet in the "enemy territory" to let people know about the fediverse, I don't see alternatives to wake up people.

@_elena @randahl For sure. Leaving the users behind in the monoverse is not doing anyone any good.

As the fediverse grows the monoverse will fight back. The story of a better alternativ need to be toll. Everywhere.

Thank again for you brilliant video. This is the way!

@sindum @_elena @randahl

I like «monoverse», there would also be «oligoverse».

@sindum @_elena @randahl

/me appears in comments randomly, steals "monoverse", disappears back into bushes.

@mousey « monoverse » is such a great term!

@sindum 🏆🙌

@randahl

@_elena @randahl

how can we push it on youtube ?
just like and subscribe ?

@luca maybe like it and comment on it? https://youtu.be/YRJHIJy5Nno grazie Luca!

@luca and commenting and clicking the share button. @_elena

@_elena It's about OUTreach, after all.

@randahl

@_elena The video was really well done :-)

The more the message spreads, the better the awareness. Even if people don’t flock to the Fediverse, the fact that they are aware of its existence is already a massive win!

@randahl

Yeah, it is on YouTube or LinkedIn and has cookies - Bert Hubert's writings

So as a bit of a followup to my earlier post “What we in the open world are messing up in trying to compete with big tech ”: please (mostly) stop harassing people doing the right thing from the wrong platforms. We often see journalists, politicians, writers, NGOs and even software developers writing good things on independence from (US) big tech proprietary platforms. But also quite often, their work is hosted or syndicated on the very platforms they decry.

Bert Hubert's writings
@_elena @randahl
It should go without saying that we should use the media that is right for us as users. There are no bans. Not even YT. We all have that much decision-making power.

@_elena @randahl

There are lots of intelligent people in the Fediverse. Unfortunately, they are not always socially smart. I wonder if being excluded (or self-excluded) from 'normal' society makes them unaware of how things work for 'normal' people. The lack of empathy, coupled with not receiving feedback from 'normal' people (because the Fediverse is a bubble), means they miss a lot of things.

I'm all for using bad platforms to talk about the good ones to bring more people here. 👍

@_elena @randahl you did nothing wrong
@_elena @randahl is the option the makes most sense! Loved the video! Send it to my dad, now he’s also intrigued! 🤗 keep it up!
@_elena Uhg, how could this be in any way controversial? Sone people here can be so awful.

@_elena @randahl

I am not surprised. Unfortunately, the Fediverse can sometimes exhibit a pretty toxic "holier than you" attitude. ☹️

@_elena @randahl Yeah I personally post on YouTube as part of a funnel that moves people to Mastodon, PeerTube, and my website.

I think that's the key here - make each video an opportunity for people to migrate :)

@_elena @randahl Haters gonna hate, whatever you do. The only sensible thing is to ignore them, always 🫡
@_elena @randahl Of course the ad I saw displayed on the page is for FB. I've never seen an ad for FB before...

@starlily @randahl OMG 😱😵 this has got to be the worst ad placement I've ever seen.

Thanks for sharing, though ❤️

I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!

@_elena @randahl Oh, I am pretty sure it was deliberate on YTs part..

@starlily @_elena @randahl Guys guys guys...

ublock origin

It works wonders. Wonders, I tell you.

Intelligent viewers should realize how the presence of that ad simply supports the points you are making in the video.
@_elena @starlily @randahl I imagine that it’s very likely that Meta places ads on Google platforms using fediverse and fedi platform names as keywords. In other words, I suspect that this wasn’t a coincidence.
@_elena @randahl Honestly didn't understand the reason behind it being so controversial first and just expected it to be more backlash on YouTube for promoting something "unnormal". After reading the comments its honestly astonishing how you stand so much in your own way and cause without realising.
