Teaching a bit of Sholem Aleichem, which, though awesome, feels wrong for my lack of Yiddish. (Have only a smattering from my parents and grandparents.) However! I'm on sabbatical beginning in June. What's the best place to start? Open to lessons, short-term immersive programs, quality resources, etc.

Can someone design a bot that reminds people to use a gift link when they post an article from the nytimes et al.?

New Haven, April 23-24, 2023
Co-Sponsored by Yale University and Princeton University

[. . .] Our aim is to host a conference that is on the one hand inclusive and represents the methodological diversity within the field, and on the other hand disciplinarily specific enough to encourage in-depth, technical discussions that might feel out of place in other forums.

We invite papers on any topic relating to rabbinic literature of the first millennium C.E.

Applicants are requested to submit a title and a short abstract (up to 400 words) to [email protected] by 5pm on January 15th, 2023. We encourage submissions from scholars at all stages of their career after the completion of the Ph.D.
Yale University plans to cover presenters' accommodations for the night; some assistance in travel funds may also be available; meals will be provided.

His tweets are bad enough. But looking at his replies and choices of engagement is downright terrifying.
Even if it accomplishes nothing else, the flight to mastodon has been great for thinking about what social media is and isn’t and could be and can’t be.

New platform… time for an #introduction

I'm a Senior Lecturer (= Associate Professor) in Theology and World Christianity in the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh. I co-direct the Centre for the Study of World Christianity.

Much of my work has been on theology in mainland China. I'm currently working in the areas of: #theology from a #WorldChristianity perspective, #digitaltheology, and #BritishChinese Christianity.

I had an idea for a migration-related Twitter app.

PROBLEM: you want to deactivate your account, but make a statement about why for your followers; or even just leave your Mastodon handle. But your post will disappear when you deactivate your account.

IDEA: A bot that you tag in your last post that pulls the text and quotes with your name/handle (and a screenshot for verification?).

Thoughts?

Christmas decorations are going up! You’ve got the tree, lights, asbestos… Wait, what?

For decades, asbestos was sold as artificial snow. It could be bought in boxes to be sprinkled onto trees, ornaments, nativity scenes, etc. It was so popular, many older ornaments still have traces of asbestos.

It was also used in film. The most famous scene with asbestos snow is in Wizard of Oz (1939), when snow falls on Dorothy and her friends, waking them up.

#Ugaritic word of the day:

Glṯ, meaning some kind of cold or wet meteorological phenomenon. Maybe "storm", "flood" or "wave" or, according to some, "snow" (with metathesis from *ṯlg). Anyway, Baal is said to send this in the Baal Cycle at a special "appointed time"!
