A stupid IT guy.

It is a long-standing tradition for Microsoft to use a runtime copy of Windows as a part of Windows Setup. But the copy is so stripped-down, it cannot run anything but the setup program (winsetup.bin).

OR IS IT?

A mini-challenge for myself: create a semi-working desktop only based on runtime Windows 3.10 shipped with Windows 95 installer but not using any other Microsoft products.

Lots of nostalgic and weird screenshots in this 🧵 thread

Done!! Now I can convert a standard #openbsd system into a one with #readonly #filesystem , #carp setup, #ssh access only via #jail / #chroot ... just to run few scripts, reboot .. mission accomplished.

Another batch of Mastodon instances where the tech is strong and the terminals run deep. Adding a few more instances to the curated list of active Fediverse IT/tech/dev communities I bumped into recently:

🔹 bumscode. (https://bumscode.com/about) — invite-only hub for tech pros, coders, hackers & open-source folks who like smaller circles and sharper signal.
🔹 front-end.social (https://front-end.social/about) — human-first web makers championing accessibility, UX, and a more inclusive Open Web
🔹 drupal.community (https://drupal.community/about) — home of the :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3} tribe: modules, themes, hooks, and `.twig` wizardry 💙
🔹 vmst.io (https://vmst.io/about) — respectful technologists, geeks, and nerds of every stripe. Good vibes, smart threads, proper bit-energy ⚡

More niche hubs soon — Fediverse growth rate now exceeds my ability to bookmark responsibly 😄

Does anyone remember the old internet? I have spent a lot of time trying to pinpoint what it was exactly about it that felt different. Many aspects are definitely seen through the lens of nostalgia. There seem to be more creative content creators and genuine connection on lesser known platform right now. There used to be a sense of excitement from discovering new places on the internet. It wasn't all about generating income or becoming famous.
@selfhosting Oh, hi! 👍

Don't be the guy watching the Internet disappear! Here are a few great self-hosted “Wayback Machine” alternatives to help you keep your corner of the web alive:

Wayback, a lightweight web archiving and playback tool:

📦 ArchiveBox, a self-hosted app that saves entire websites in multiple formats:

Karakeep (formerly Hoarder), a “bookmark-everything” app with a touch of AI to help organize your saved web finds:

Is there any better way to kick off a #RetroComputing bookmarks than with a site serving actual Windows and DOS boot disks? 😄
