New study gave $7,500 to 50 unhoused people.
Guess what?
"They did not spend more money on alcohol or drugs, contrary to what people believe, and instead they spent the money on rent, food, housing, transit, furniture, a used car, clothes. It's entirely the opposite of what people think they're going to do with the money."
Congrats to my UBC colleague Jiaying Zhao on this study.
A new B.C.-based study undercuts the persistent stereotype that homeless people can't be trusted with cash, according to the lead researcher who says it also highlights a different way to respond to the crisis.
How big is the #unknome? In other words, how many of the 20,000 or so genes in the human genome are unknown (in function)? Is there a gradient of unknown-ness? A new paper in @PLOSBiology by Rocha and colleagues introduces us to the unknome and then adds some good stuff, which is the least the authors can do after telling us how little we know about human gene function.

FYI, when a website erases your text that you just spent an hour writing, you can use this little trick to recover it 99% of the time:
1. find the firefox pid
$ pgrep -l firefox
2. attach gdb to firefox and dump its core
$ sudo gdb <pid>
gcore firefox.dump
<this takes awhile>
quit
<firefox dies>
3. find your lost text in the coredump
$ strings firefox.dump | grep "a unique word/sentence from ur text"
i just did this today to recover a long post i wrote, and figured i'd show others!!
After a quick search, it seems that "reminder ads" that don't mention a drug's purpose are legal in Canada. Seems like a particularly irresponsible loophole given the use of ozempic off-label to treat weight loss
