I'll have you know I'm not that kind of doctor.

I just realized that it's April 23.

That means it's the anniversary of the Farmville, Virginia Motion High School student strike.

What? You don't know about that?

Well, in 1951, Barbara Johns was fed up with the deplorable conditions in her segregated school, so she organized a strike. She was inspired by labor strikes.

After she and her classmates turned the rural town of Farmville upside down, she called in the NAACP.

@DrPsyBuffy that's what they're counting on. Be angry, be goaded into action, be fire.
@DrPsyBuffy And they probably don't even get the comfort of cats!
@Teri_Kanefield Who knew that SCOTUS justices surprise, surprise, can act strategically and probably even think about the politics of the issues before them?
@Teri_Kanefield I'm glad I'm not seeing people melting down over this. Seems to me that not only is cert a minority decision, but I could easily imagine justices who think immunity is a nonstarter wanting to take the case in order to settle the question with some degree of finality.
@Teri_Kanefield I'm interested to see what you have to say. I suspect (believe) I'd agree with you, but I also am fairly certain that your response will be better than mine would be and that I would benefit by internalizing your approach to the comment.

@Teri_Kanefield To a European, a Yankee is an American; to an American, a Yankee is a northeasterner; to a northeasterner, a Yankee is a New Englander; to a New Englander, a Yankee is a Vermonter; and to a Vermonter, a Yankee is someone who eats pie for breakfast.

Now that's settled, onward!

@tob @DrPsyBuffy I'll pick nits here.

Not norms, preferences. Those who enforce rules have their own preferences, and if they prefer to let rulebreaking stand to exercising their institutional authority (and if they can get away with it), they will. "Who guards the guardians?" is an old, old question.

@TruthSandwich @Teri_Kanefield Agreed on democracy vs. direct democracy, but felt the need to clarify given the typical "not democratic enough" complaint one hears about decisions that don't involve everybody... Not sure I agree with the rest of what you say, but it's not vital that I do.
