Senators Signal They're Prepared To Push Back Against NASA Cuts - Slashdot

Senators from both parties are preparing to challenge the Trump administration's proposed 24% cut to NASA's budget, with the Senate appropriations committee advancing a $24.9 billion allocation that matches the agency's 2025 funding levels. The bipartisan pushback directly contradicts President Do...

In my solarpunk novel series, I have a Trillionaires Exclusion Act that basically outlaws trillionaires because the world got fed up with their bullshit sometime in the 2030's (novel set in 2050). Musk might single-handedly accelerate that timetable.

If you want to buy a new TV but would prefer that it were stupid, as I have for years now, then get one from Sceptre, an American electronics firm that makes Dumb TVs. We got our 55" 4K TV for $330 and, while it’s not amazing, it works great with our Apple TV box. Then you can avoid the coming madness illustrated below. #tech #advertising #television https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/11/an-ad-giant-wants-to-control-your-next-tvs-operating-system/

1/ Even though stars are huge, they're so far away they mostly look like points to us. While we've been able to resolve details in a handful of stars within the Milky Way, our home galaxy, we now have a close-up view of a star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy orbiting our own, 160 000 lightyears away.

Astronomers take the first close-up picture of a star outside our galaxy

“For the first time, we have succeeded in taking a zoomed-in image of a dying star in a galaxy outside our own Milky Way,” says Keiichi Ohnaka, an astrophysicist from Universidad Andrés Bello in Chile. Located a staggering 160 000 light-years from us, the star WOH G64 was imaged thanks to the impressive sharpness offered by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (ESO’s VLTI). The new observations reveal a star puffing out gas and dust, in the last stages before it becomes a supernova.
