The U.S. cell service problems today are a good reminder that it would be good to have more than one way to communicate in case of an emergency. Consider getting a #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio license.
@ingalls or a landline? 📞
@peterbrown Landlines are also good but can be taken out in natural disasters as well. The old movie trope of people cutting wires before committing some crime in a home exists for a reason. Everyone should have a method of communication that doesn't rely on local infrastructure.
@ingalls Rather get a ham radio license in case you like experimenting around with radios, propagation or such.
@dg3hda why not both?
@ingalls it would be too dull for me, as you are not in a emergency most of the time, during emergency you might be busy surviving and if you are the hi-viz guy next to real emergency response teams, being somewhere between second banana to "Let me help! Let me help!" annoyance, also doesn't sound good to me. In the meantime I had some fun listening to ISS; doing amateur tv, building my own receivers and radio modems, helped operating voice, tv, and data repeaters, learned stuff I was able (...)
@ingalls to use on job and dozens over dozens over dozens of nice contacts. And somewhat emcomm able. Emcomm alone isn't worth it.
