Carl Sagan died on this day in 1996. Perhaps his least known yet loveliest legacy is that he inspired Maya Angelou's stunning poem "A Brave and Startling Truth" — a cosmic clarion call to humanity, which actually traveled to space https://t.co/Z34eMxUyEl

The Marginalian

In reality, I suspect that the only thing this new film shares with our long-lived planetary mission is the name “Mars Express”, although whether that is entirely coincidental, I have no idea.

There is already a spin-off prequel novel by Cédric Degottex: https://groupe.bragelonne.fr/en/foreign-rights/book/mars-express/

It's paper time!

The first results from my #JWST time, in a project shared with Tom Ray et al. from the MIRI consortium, a study of the extremely young protostellar outflow, HH211, in Perseus, published in advance form in Nature today.

Here's the headline image, a composite of three of the NIRCam filters we used.

Outflows from the youngest stars are mostly molecular - Nature

Near-infrared imagery and spectroscopy from JWST of the Herbig-Haro 211 system, an analogue of the young Sun, reveals  supersonic jets of hot molecules that can explain the origin of the ‘green fuzzies’ phenomenon.

When cities invest in good cycling infrastructure and safe cycling, a rapidly increasing share of people use a bicycle for their trips around town. (By now 62% of commuters in Copenhagen.) It's fun, efficient, clean, silent and fast. Car drivers benefit, too, from uncongested roads.

Here are the landing site locations of Chandrayaan-3 and Luna-25 and the crash site locations of Luna-25 and Chandrayaan-2.

Luna-25 crashed in Pontecoulant G crater at 2:58 p.m. Moscow time on August 19, not far from the planned landing site.

Chandrayaan-3 will land tomorrow (Aug 23) at 12:34 UTC.

If you’d asked me just twelve hours ago whether I hoped to be able to post a picture for #Caturday, I would have said “no”.

I would have said I’d given up all hope of #Tigger coming home after 26 days away 😿

And I would have been wrong 😱

As it is, I’m just amazed & grateful that he returned shortly after midnight last night. Very skinny, but otherwise seemingly well & very loud 😺🥰

Thank you to everyone who kept hoping 🙇‍♂️🙂👍

The prodigal son 😺

A week after his return, #Tigger has regained a lot of his lost weight & as his facial demeanour might suggest, is fully enjoying being served on hand & foot 🤷‍♂️

And to be honest, we’re only too happy to do so 🙇‍♂️

And that, ladies & gentlemen, is that 🍾

My final #JWST Guaranteed Time Observation programmes for Cycle 3 have been submitted on deadline day & all but a few minutes of my allocation used. Even that we'll try to tweak later – it's precious stuff 💎

These new projects will image two young clusters & a protostellar jet that haven't yet been observed with JWST, looking at star formation across the Milky Way ✨

Likely to be scheduled in 2024 & 2025 – stay tuned 🖖🙂🤘
