Johnstoniana errans. I find these semi-aquatic mites in a very wet location beside a stream running through woodland. They seem to like to cluster together under large bits of deadwood. #Acari

Symphylans (or ‘garden centipedes’) are Myriapods, making them distantly related to millipedes, centipedes and pauropods.

They're an absolute nightmare to photograph, as they rapidly run away when disturbed, e.g., when their favourite stone is turned over!

Snail on a stick. I didn't put it there, that's where I found it and thought it made an interesting composition.
My first spider record of 2023 and she's a bit of a stunner. Spotted this Ozyptila praticola spider on a very soggy woodland floor this evening.
I've been photographing Monobella grassei over the new year. Love watching these tiny orange springtails going about their business.
Little slime moulds (Metatrichia floriformis, I think) ready to release their spores. The 1mm black balls are fruiting bodies and split open, like flowers, releasing spores. Floriformis means 'flower-shaped'. #FungiFriday
@Brusinka You're welcome 😅
@JaneinNJ I couldn't! It never stopped running for the whole time I observed it so no chance of a measured photo stack, just a single shot.

Continuing #introduction: by day I'm a professor (biochemistry & cell biology) running a research lab where we've published many studies using budding yeast (think beer and bread).

So naturally, as an artist by night, I had to sculpt our favorite organism. Here is Saccharomyces cerevisiae in late anaphase, mother cell producing a daughter cell, jeweled chromosomes separating inside the nucleus. Bronze, silver, 3D printed steel, and apatite gemstones. #sciart #cellbiology #celldivision

This yellow springtail is Protaphorura aurantiaca. Spotted loads of these today. #collembola
