The media tries hard to make black women think they aren’t beautiful.

Any entity that lies so hard must fear what would happen if you knew the truth.

Think about that.

Our country has an obsession with viewing and sharing trauma videos instead of taking a moment to consider what we’re going to do about this system.

I'm not the “black sheep” of the spaces I step into. I'm the dark horse.

Everyone underestimates the imperative nature of the “soft black girl” movement.
Dark skin black women especially have been characterized as strong under the depiction of different characters dating back to the development of minstrel shows in the early 19th century.
Our girls and women are naturally soft, strong, and beautiful. We’re far from a monolith.

Inspired by @mellifera I also grew up as an #AltBlackGirl and I struggled with that part of my identity. But it’s one of the many ingredients I need for my #BlackJoy

Black Joy thrives in those moments when we’re not concerned with or pigeonholed by white supremacy. It is self love and resistance.

Queen Nzingha Mbande ruled the kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba (modern day Angola) beginning in 1624 at the height of Portuguese colonial pressure. She led a fierce, 40-year military resistance against the Portuguese. Mikael Owunna: “Nzinga ruled dressed in full male clothing as a king and had a harem of young men dressed as women who were her wives. You basically had a butch queen with a bunch of drag queens for wives leading a fight against European colonization.” #BlackFriday #LGBTQ
Follow my colleague @maxnesterak at the Minnesota Reformer, who recently joined Mastodon. Here's a story Max and I did covering flaws in the Minneapolis Police discipline system a couple years ago. https://minnesotareformer.com/2020/12/15/the-bad-cops-how-minneapolis-protects-its-worst-police-officers-until-its-too-late/
The Bad Cops: How Minneapolis protects its worst police officers until it’s too late - Minnesota Reformer

Files obtained by the Reformer show a pattern of mismanagement in the Minneapolis Police Department which makes it unable to discipline and remove officers who pose a danger to the public.

Books by James Baldwin, one of America’s greatest intellectuals, humanists and activists (he was also a film critic* and historian) that I highly recommend. Well, I highly recommend all of them including the one in my photo. Here are just a few of the other Baldwin books you must read:

Go Tell It On The Mountain
Notes Of A Native Son
No Name In The Street
The Devil Finds Work*
Another Country
If Beale Street Could Talk
The Evidence Of Things Not Seen

Being normalized to capitalist, fascist, patriarchal, racist existance is 10/10 not “healthy.”
