This reflection on the relationship between scholarly societies and journals, by historian Aileen Fyfe, rewards a careful read.

Of the Royal Society, she writes: "The fellows may still have expressed ‘goodwill’ towards the journals, but the mismatch between ‘the society community’ (small, British) and ‘the journal community’ (large, international) meant that the fellows lacked the sense of ‘ownership’ of the journals they had once had."

Do journals need societies, and do societies need journals?

Historically, there has been a tight link between journals, journal publications and a community of scholars working in specific fields of research who contribute to and manage them. As journal pub…

My current take on #ChatGPT vs. #Wikipedia. Sure, ChatGPT is highly competent in generating plausible (mostly accurate) prose on encyclopaedic topics. And it is more useful than WP for targeted comparisons ("Explain the difference between X and Y"). However, #trust in WP comes from it being based on #references. Ask ChatGPT for references, and it will generate some #plausible (but mostly #fictitious) titles and authors and/or websites. So, useless in information-seeking scenarios.
