@petergleick my hope is that if extraterrestrials made it all the way to earth, they will have better technology for getting about while visiting than balloons.
@mikemathia same, great big spinners are so cheap now I can just tack an extra 24TB into my raid array for a few hundred bucks, and I’d honestly rather spend my money on that and not be dictated new terms under which my family can consume content. Plus it’s been fun setting up new ddns scripts and reverse proxies.
Goodbye Felicia. Longest I’ve ever subbed to anything, got DVDs in the mail. Almost everything I have is behind VPNs and on top of that I live in multiple cities. It feels like that moment when you’re suddenly serene about ending a LTR. That’s ok. I’ve got an awful lot of terabytes of storage, a fiber connection and poweredge servers in my basement.

@clipperchip @darkuncle @xabean @shortstack @Viss @morb I just saw the 3.5" floppy that had my IRC battle scripts on it in the storage room the other day let's do this
@forrestbrazeal I have a little Linux box whose sole purpose is to run a bash script on a cronjob to check and see if my external IP has changed and if it has then update the dns servers through the API.
@RARohde these are the same people who watch stock charts in 1 minute candles and the moment it turns green say "see it's recovering!" but then you zoom out a year and it's down 98%

@MostlyWriting I haven't seen the HBO adaptation of it yet but I have been very much looking forward to it (and I don't really watch tv usually at all) because the game was so, so good. I'm not a gamer either but the story was so well done, the acting was so well done, it was really a huge leap in what a "video game" could be. It's the only game I ever finished and then immediately started over again.

Ultimately it is really just another zombie apocalypse story but it (the game) was done so well that it developed a cult following and thus the hype for the show.

@rose I remember buying (and using) an "Internet directory" physical paper book that was just like a phone book, you looked up the subject of the site and it told you the address. Well, told you it's domain name.
