Hey vis.social folks!

Might be a good idea to add CWs to any posts about Zelda for a while. Lot's of folks can't play the game yet, and won't appreciate your spoilers.

Also, it's off topic for this instance. So double reason to add a CW.

Remember, we and many other community instances use the CW as a "Content Wrapper" rather than a "Conent Warning". We do what we can with the tools we have.

Please boost this, so that more folks on vis.social will see it.

VIS 2023 Voter Registration

VIS community members are responsible for electing a number of positions each year to the VIS Steering Committee (VSC) and the VIS Executive Committee (VEC). These bodies provide oversight and planning for the VIS conference as described in the VIS Charter: http://ieeevis.org/governance/IEEE-governance-structure Eligible voters are individuals who have participated in at least 1 previous IEEE VIS conference in some capacity. Participation includes registration, attendance, submission, authorship, or involvement in organization at VIS or any of its associated events. To register to vote in the 2023 VIS elections, please complete the form below. The email address you provide will be used to communicate election instructions as the conference nears. If you have registered in the past (that includes ticking the option in conference registration in 2022), then you do not need to register again. Please directly contact the election chairs at [email protected] if you wish to change the email address that we have on file for you.

When folks starting signing up and returning to this instance, a few months ago, I knew that we needed to provide a life-boat for our community. And some folks would eventually find other instances to move to.

Our server costs went up, as well. Folks stepped up to help cover those costs.

But now, this support has decreased. Enough so, that I'm getting a little concerned.

If you'd like to help keep this instance up and running, there are three options: Ko-fi, Patreon, and github.sponsors.

Related to my project/job search (https://glammr.us/@steamworkgroup/110237159782682144), I'd love to help an organization with the kind of work in this grant from NEH.

Due date June 28, up to $25k.

There's a lot of solid, equity-focused front-end eval that could be done with that!

Boosts welcome.

"When consumers lack trust in a company’s data collection and processing activities, they become more likely to take actions that resemble what Georgetown Law professor Julie Cohen called privacy self-defense... Over the past 12 months, 85% of consumers said they deleted a phone app, 82% opted out of sharing personal data, 78% avoided a particular website and 67% decided against making an online purchase due to privacy concerns."

I've been haunted by this graph these last few days.

Oil crisis of the 70's and economic slowdown during COVID are barely visible blips on the relentless upward slope of energy consumption.

See the dent renewables are making in reducing the use of fossil fuels? Me neither.

Our grad union is in hearings with the NLRB this week and we just got these gems from Dr. Sara Wadia-Fascetti, Vice Provost:

GENU-UAW, asking if there is a distinction in PhD workers: "Does a fellow and a SGA work in the lab side by side?"

Vice Provost: "They don't work."

...

GENU: "Is research hard work?"

VP: "Research is challenging"

🙄 Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to BEING CHALLENGED we go 🎶

Probably one of the kindest things you can do for your community is internalize the idea that things can be true for other people without being even legible to you, and that those epistemological differences can be accepted.
