This is so incredibly short sighted and intentionally ignorant, too. Laying off so many staff - and the entire evaluation department (!!!) - in response to fascist-led federal cuts will hurt the museum and surrounding communities for years. Evaluation staff at SMM did all kinds of good and thoughtful work all around the state and were committed to equitable evaluation principles.

Science Museum of Minnesota lays off 43 employees

The museum’s reduction in staff comes months after the Trump administration announced that it would be cutting more than $1.3 million in grants from Minnesota museums and institutions.

Relatedly: if anyone you know needs some extra help with equitable evaluation or research projects (data collection, analysis, study design) or strategic planning, I'd greatly appreciate contacts or connections!

My website has a sampling of my previous collaborators - mostly in the glam and nonprofit sector. I'm most proud + humbled that I learned from and worked with the Equitable Evaluation Initiative, and I'd like to put that to work!

I'm excited about all the prep I'm doing with some colleagues for an upcoming VSA session in mid-July on reimaging evaluation to be open to promoting anti-racism and social justice as an axiology.

And I'm also worried, given the fact that it always feels like we're "starting the conversation" instead of demonstrably progressing and acting. I'm personally citing work 50 years old on this topic. We're always restarting.

Edit: Still accurate

This is confirmed damn near every time I open up AEA, VSA, or MERL Tech articles and posts these days.

And yes, it is a choice! So tiring and disappointing, even tho I'm just scrolling past, blocking, or deleting nonsense at this point. It's all just so loud and takes up so much space.

(I made this a few weeks ago, but finally got annoyed enough to share it.)

Over the last three-four years, I've seen so many more trackers (pixels, cookies, API calls, and other identifiers) in so called "anonymous surveys." Nevermind the triangulation questions. I've had to all but yell at other companies - all of which should know better - to attempt stop this nonsense. Most of the time, I get a pat on the head and told not to worry.

Most of the time, I honestly don't even understand how I was invited to be in community and practice with such wonderful people. I'm okay with that mystery (I think). If you have the chance to talk with them, do so. Please.

Analyzing #evaluation data from an exhibition and wow, the rating data are so clear. Significant change happened, and even in the intended direction!

Then, I move to the open ended interview data that goes along with those ratings...and the change situation becomes much more nuanced. And less certain. And messy.

I'm here for it. Just hoping that other folks at the org are, too - because a response will be required if they're serious about org #values and intention!

#Introduction #Migration Hey everyone. I'm trying out a couple instances to see where my main social home should be now. I'm an evaluator, ethnomusicologist, and quasi-museum person.

Unapologetically for equitable evaluation practices and direct talk about our assumptions and biases in research and evaluation.

Also, as of December looking for new projects!

Lots of nonprofit programs would benefit from an IRB-like process. But even the federal grant programs seem to lack appropriate guardrails.

One program that I got salty about recently (and posted my email response to their RFP publicly) had no business being funded by IMLS. It is actively doing harm. Yet the program continues working with vulnerable populations while claiming "social justice values."
