❗️New article alert❗️

In the journal "Big Data and Society," my article titled "Data Arenas: The Relational Dynamics of Data Activism" was published. I showcase how concepts such as arenas and field theory can be utilized to study environmental data activism, with a focus on the contextual and relational aspects of data activism.

My chapter "A Strategic Toolbox of Symbolic Objects" is now published in "Symbolic Objects in Contentious Politics" by University of Michigan Press. I explore strategic dilemmas of materiality in street-protest arenas. I truly recommend the entire book edited by Ben Abrams and Pete Gardner. I've had a chance to read all the authors already - really great STUFF! There's an amazing concluding chapter that opens up a new field of research. Ugh -- I'm seeing a lot of commentary along the lines of "'stochastic parrot' might have been an okay characterization of previous models, but GPT-4 actually is intelligent."

Spoiler alert: It's not. Also, stop being so credulous.

(Some of this I see because it's tweeted at me, but more of it comes to me by way of the standing search I have on the phrase "stochastic parrots" and its variants. The tweets in that column have been getting progressively more toxic over the past couple of months.)

I'm hiring a postdoc! If you know a really great new PhD interested in pollution, sensors, and participatory science, please send them my way. This is a 3-year appointment with a big focus on multi-disciplinary collaboration and community engagement. #sts #citizenscience #soil #sensors #job #environmentaljustice

"This article outlines a feminist energy research agenda that addresses many aspects of energy system design, planning, exchange, and use. We analyze energy along four intersecting coordinates: the political (democratic, decentralized and pluralist); economic (prioritizing human well-being and biodiversity over profit and unlimited growth); socio-ecological (preferring relationality over individualism); and technological (privileging distributed and decentralized fuel power and people power)." https://doi.org/10.1016/j.erss.2020.101557

Hello Mastodon!

By way of an #introduction to my fellow #TwitterMigration people, I'm Benjamin Abrams, a Political Sociologist at University College London (UCL).

I write and teach about revolutions, social movements and resistance, as well as modern democracy and popular mobilization.

Follow me if you’re interested in discussion and coverage of revolts, mass mobilization and the likely fate of democracy in the current age, from a scholarly perspective. #FollowFriday :SoM

#introduction toot - I'm an assistant prof. of sociology at the University of Haifa. I study #algorithms / #data / #AI from a qualitative, critical perspective. My current projects include algorithmic production in #SiliconValley, data infrastructures in Israel, Israeli #surveillance firms, #aiethics, and more. In previous life I also wrote about #ptsd, online #depression, and more. Oh, and this 👇 is Bella.

We have decided to create an account at Mastodon. We need time to learn how this platform works but also how to synchronize our work here with the Twitter account.

Thank you all for joining us here. No matter where we are, the mission stays the same. We are in social media to commemorate the victims of Auschwitz and educate the world about the tragic story of the camp.

#PhD students of #Mastodon, I have created a Mastadon group for sharing PhD-related posts using @phdstudents when posting a PhD student toot. Let's help the group to grow and share our PhD student experiences.

All,

I've gotten a small team together and we have started development on the Mastodon server for the disability community.

I am in the process of outlining some additional roles we will need to fill to make this succeed, and will put out a solicitation for that at a later date.

I am also making an outline for the information database we want to build, and will likely recruit people (or solicit information) for various pieces of it.
