@mikael Agree with all the points you have made. A few follow-up questions, if you will indulge me some more:

1. Re: real-world interaction. Is the unavailability of sensory inputs a (the only?) hurdle to sentience?

2. Re: the nervous system. Can an approximation be partially-achieved through simulated multi-modality? Kinda like a future-pilot learning on sims before taking to the skies?

3. Re: consequences. The current "training" also builds on consequences, right? Are those not applicable?

Thank you both for indulging me! I do have a few follow-up questions, though:

@mike805 Could you point me to a resource to better understand this statement you made?

> You could create all sorts of paradoxes if it were.

@nikhil When you say 'sentience' like a toddler, what does that look like? Is it quantifiable?

(Just want to confirm something here...)

What are your thoughts on the topic of AI and sentience? Is AI sentient? Can it be sentient?

If it is sentient, how does that impact humanity in general?

If it is not sentient, is there a possibility it might gain sentience?

Just... humour me.

@jensorensen This isn't Luddism, though. This is exactly how evolution of most technology progresses...

1. New technology enables mass production. (printing press)
2. Old tech practitioners go out of business. (scribes & calligraphers)
3. New tech enables cheap, common, and banal output. (self-publishing)

At this point, the old tech practitioners transition from being Luddites to Artists.

And this time, the evolution from step 1 to step 3 has happened over an incredibly short timescale...

@codinghorror I wonder if it was an attempt at promoting something by making it a "secret" that you weren't supposed to see.... 🤔

@Viss

@Viss @codinghorror The exact same thought popped into my head, except the filename in my example was a little more... risque! 😁

@madhu_shrieks I think you are mixing the two contexts.

Streaming killing ownership is in the context of everything becoming a subscription and thus encouraging rent-seeking behaviour. And, in fact, your example of "owning a few things" also carries an inherent opposition to such rent-seeking.

Put it this way, it's the difference between having a library at home vs a library you can pay a subscription to.

As it stands, you cannot build said library at home and that, IMHO, is a problem...

Q. What does Cristiano Ronaldo say to his kids every morning when he leaves for training?

A.

@mhoye Slightly off-track but this might be something to consider as well: https://bowshock.nl/irc/

There was some good discussion around it on HN as well, the other day: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44287395
