“We are dealing with not one but two unreliable narrators: Musk and Isaacson himself.”

How the Elon Musk biography exposes Walter Isaacson

Walter Isaacson’s Elon Musk is a strangely incurious book. Its shallow reporting and bizarre skew left me with more questions than I had before I read it.

Tesla Europe needed a way of moving employees at their factory outside Berlin. So they did they Tesla thing, and dug a tunnel and filled it with self-driving cars.

No of course not, they got a train.

Apple's statement is the death knell for the idea that it's possible to scan everyone's comms AND preserve privacy.

Apple has many of the best cryptographers + software eng on earth + infinite $.

If they can't, no one can. (They can't. No one can.)

Apple's Decision to Kill Its CSAM Photo-Scanning Tool Sparks Fresh Controversy

Child safety group Heat Initiative plans to launch a campaign pressing Apple on child sexual abuse material scanning and user reporting. The company issued a rare, detailed response on Thursday.

Apple's fall event is coming up and it's expected that the iPhone 15 will adopt USB-C. Let's clear a few things up:
▶︎ Apple designed Lightning as a modern connector for "the next decade" (that was in September 2012).
▶︎ Apple needed a reversible, universal adapter (well, "universal" to Apple at least) in 2012 - USB-C spec was still two years away from being published.
▶︎ Apple "isn't mad" about changing to USB-C. If anything, Apple must have a crystal ball because they hit the "decade" nail on the head! If it wasn't for COVID, I bet the transition would have completed MUCH sooner.
▶︎ Apple has already been transitioning to USB-C since 2016. Remember the redesigned MacBooks? Every model since has been USB-C and it's been nothing but complaining about "dongle hell" ignoring the fact that maybe it's the peripheral manufacturers refusing to give up USB-A?
▶︎ Proprietary ports, open standard ports. Nothing seems to make anyone happy. While USB-C is far from perfect, it FINALLY embraces the "Universal" part of Universal Serial Bus.
▶︎ BTW, Apple sits on the Board of Directors for the USB Implementers Forum... so... yeah, they're kinda into this whole USB thing and know proprietary connectors are so 2012.

A list of recent hostile moves by #Google's #Chrome team; handy for sharing with your entourage, to explain why they should stop using #Chromium / #GoogleChrome and use #Firefox or #Epiphany as their main #web #browser :

* The "Manifest v3" sabotage of content blocking extensions: https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/10/23131029/mozilla-ad-blocking-firefox-google-chrome-privacy-manifest-v3-web-request
* The attempted sabotage of #JPEGXL: https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/chrome-banishes-jpeg-xl-photo-format-that-could-save-phone-space/
* #WebEnvironmentIntegrity a.k.a. #DRM for whole websites would hurt the web, #opensource browsers and OSes: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/googles-web-integrity-api-sounds-like-drm-for-the-web/

Firefox and Chrome are squaring off over ad-blocker extensions

Mozilla, the makers of the Firefox browser, has said that ad blocking at the network level will be supported in its implementation of the Manifest V3 standard, drawing a contrast with Google Chrome.

The Verge
If someone drafted a proposal to the W3C that only a pre-approved set of existing browsers should be allowed to render web pages, the correct response would not be to "take the stance that you oppose that proposal," it would be to seriously question whether the party should even participate in the group. Make no mistake, that is what is happening now.

This is scary. It's (strong) SafetyNet for websites.

Every now and then I run into another Android app I can no longer run because someone decided my phone, running an official build of my choice of OS, that isn't even rooted, is "not trustable".

Now they want to start doing that for websites.

This kills open Linux on the desktop (including Asahi Linux). It kills alternative browsers. It is a backdoor to kill ad blockers.

No. Just no. Please.

Threads gaining 30 million users in 24 hours is a perfect example of the unfair, anticompetitive, monopolistic advantage Meta has by owning the social graph.

We should demand laws that make us the owners of our social graphs and mandate that social media companies enable social graph import and export.

I quit twitter after Elon made some anti-trans tweet (and it wasn't his last). From everything I've seen, Twitter has only become more of a cesspool under that same leadership. But Tim Apple continued to invest something like $100 million (maybe 2-3x more?) in Twitter ads, and now the company is releasing full episodes of shows there? For a company that presents itself as inclusive, that certainly isn't reflected in the way they spend their money.
