Rooted in the Zen tradition, I also appreciate and study Early Buddhist practices and texts. I run "Rustling Leaves: A Buddhist practitioner's journal" at https://rustling-leaves.blog/ where you can find brief posts with plenty of illustrations and calligraphy. Its purpose is to share, bring a smile, inspire, or open up a question, while also staying true to the teachings as preserved. 🍂🌱🙏🏻

Inspired by the autumn season, in today's "Moments: Mist among grasses" collection, I contemplate falling leaves. You can also find a gentle reminder to examine narratives, a quote by Huang Po expressing his understanding of the Buddha-Nature, a piece of sumi-e painting, and as always, some haiku.

🙏🏻 May you all be well

elder's rest
nothing but the sound
of shifting sands

Last week, in the "Elder's Rest" article, I wrote about restlessness, silence, listening, and speech in the context of meditation as well as relationships. It was inspired by a pithy saying regarding speech by one of the Desert Mothers and Fathers, the first Christian nuns and monks dwelling in deserts.

Today I woke up to the first snowfall! Snow always brings such a unique taste of silence.

And so I think it's a wonderful time for a new article that will perhaps bring you some silence too as today I contemplate exactly that.

A haiku accompanying a brief reflection on the joy of the Bodhisattva Precepts - inspiring and beautiful vows we take in the Zen tradition.

Moments: A Ladybug Leaps into the Sky | Rustling Leaves

I reflect on the joy of the precepts we take in the Zen tradition. You will also find a few haiku, wise words from Dipa Ma, and one silly piece about cloud thieves. You perhaps met one of them too!

A world where...

all our companions from animal realms, whether cute or not so cute, would see humans as those strange beings with two legs, as good friends and sometimes also cozy pillows 😌

Have you ever noticed that each tree’s foliage has its own unique sound when moved by the wind?
