I am an engineer and have wandered through several industries. I thought I was nearing the end of my career, but now I think maybe I was just bored. Not bored anymore.

I have no idea what I’m doing here. I guess we will find out together.

I feel like the crowd here might be able to help me answer an idle question. Around 2015 or so, I met two of the most entertaining Max Planck institute researchers while on a Nat Geo cruise in the Galapagos. They were completing sleep studies on frigate birds, catching and re-catching the birds to find out if and how they sleep while flying 1000s of miles.

Could anyone help me find the publication of their study?

okay here's a first non-logistical toot: independent bookstores make a third of their sales between Thanksgiving & the end of the year 💛

pls consider getting holiday gifts from local bookstores, most of which ship nationwide

Why city planning needs diverse perspectives.

Touring possible commuter cycling routes.

What I saw - Smooth pavement. Separate from traffic. Shade. Not too busy. Perfect.

What my female partner saw - Blind corners. No lighting. No escape routes. Too few users. Wouldn’t use this route.

New Mastodon for iOS build on #TestFlight. Improved login screen, media upload progress and retry on failure, verified links on profiles, bookmarks, a more obvious account switcher, and other fixes.

This is awesome: https://social.sciences.re/@RGrunblatt/109342061792478407

Folks are crowdsourcing GDPR compliance playbooks for Mastodon instances. Because of course they are. ❤️

(I still want RTs, sorry not sorry)

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Hello, I recently wrote a registry of processing activites for Mastodon, it's available here : https://sciences.re/ropa/ Please note that being « compliant » depends of your country, because GDPR has exceptions for legal obligations that depend on the country

Mastodon -- Sciences.Re
Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing the creator of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko (@Gargron). We talked about how crazy the past few weeks have been, why the site was built to resist the kind of takeover that Twitter has seen, and what he makes of Elon's tweet poking fun at Mastodon: https://www.wired.com/story/the-man-behind-mastodon-eugen-rochko-built-it-for-this-moment/

The Man Behind Mastodon, Eugen Rochko, Built It for This Moment

People fleeing Twitter have turned to Eugen Rochko’s alternative. He says social networks can support healthy debate—without any one person in control.

Just a week or two in and I fking love this place so much. It's like stumbling out of the noise and into the kitchen at a party, and finding your people right there all the time.

You miss the friends you left behind in the shouty room where most who talk to you are looking over your shoulder to see if there's anyone more important to latch onto, but you hope your friends will soon find the kitchen, too.

Mastodon has scaled pretty dramatically over the past few days with surprisingly few incidents and slowdowns. Great job to all of our admins!!!!

Is there anyway to report out the number of new accounts and posts created over the past few days vs historical trends? I bet it would be very impressive

Mastodon is like IKEA assembly instructions. Daunting at first, but after you finally put it together, you feel like you're Jesus, a bonafide carpenter deserving of followers.
