The Voice will not solve all the problems (but is a door through which the solutions might pass)

Up for some laughs with a Big #Science Mood? We've spotlit three shows coming up in Melbourne this month that will variously bruise your humerus & accost your hippocampus until you say sorry. @micomfestival https://rsv.org.au/stemm-comedy-shows-2023/

There is big conservation news coming out of Scotland today.

The government has adopted new planning rules, known as National Planning Framework 4, which will ensure that *NO* development will be supported if it impacts ancient woodland & ancient & veteran trees across the country.

The new rules have come into force with immediate effect.

These habitats are irreplaceable, so it's a landmark step in the fight against climate & nature emergencies.

Research from Europe has shown large #solar farms can enhance the diversity and abundance of plants, grasses, #butterflies, #bees and #birds.

What’s more, vegetation between solar panel rows can also provide travel corridors, nesting sites and shelter for #wildlife. Management strategies are key to maximizing these benefits of solar farms.

Win-win: how solar farms can double as havens for our wildlife

Solar panels can provide places for animals to rest, shelter and breed – potentially benefitting both the land and farmers.

Today we're sharing the late Will Steffen's recent (2021) presentation to us on the #Anthropocene to honour his life's work, and the clear, calm, cogent style that epitomised his efforts to communicate his science to people everywhere. Vale Will. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvD0TgE34HA

Catastrophic (and to be frank - hugely depressing)

This new research in @PNASNews suggests earth will cross the 1.5 degrees C temperature increase threshold in the next decade (within just 10 to 15 years) and is likely to exceed 2 degrees C by around 2060.

This should be THE lead story on the news today (and onwards) and the lead action point for our governments. It should trigger a massive call for real global action to combat the #climateemergency - sadly though I fear this news will barely register.

We have to stop believing the siren calls of future technology solutions and #carbonoffsets - the immediate need is a rapid end to the use of #fossilfuels and a massive rollout of #renewableenergy

NASA insists it will be a near miss and nothing more, with no chance of the asteroid hitting Earth.
