New study on the effects of LLM use (in this case on essay writing):

https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872

Quote:

"LLM users also struggled to accurately quote their own work. While LLMs offer immediate convenience, our findings highlight potential cognitive costs. Over four months, LLM users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels. These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI's role in learning."

The interesting thing is: People who used search engines (to find sources etc) did not show similar issues. This is an important antidote against the belief that LLM-based tools are just like search engines. Which they are not. They are massively degrading their users' mental abilities and development. Which is why these systems have absolutely no place even _near_ any school or university.

Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task

This study explores the neural and behavioral consequences of LLM-assisted essay writing. Participants were divided into three groups: LLM, Search Engine, and Brain-only (no tools). Each completed three sessions under the same condition. In a fourth session, LLM users were reassigned to Brain-only group (LLM-to-Brain), and Brain-only users were reassigned to LLM condition (Brain-to-LLM). A total of 54 participants took part in Sessions 1-3, with 18 completing session 4. We used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess cognitive load during essay writing, and analyzed essays using NLP, as well as scoring essays with the help from human teachers and an AI judge. Across groups, NERs, n-gram patterns, and topic ontology showed within-group homogeneity. EEG revealed significant differences in brain connectivity: Brain-only participants exhibited the strongest, most distributed networks; Search Engine users showed moderate engagement; and LLM users displayed the weakest connectivity. Cognitive activity scaled down in relation to external tool use. In session 4, LLM-to-Brain participants showed reduced alpha and beta connectivity, indicating under-engagement. Brain-to-LLM users exhibited higher memory recall and activation of occipito-parietal and prefrontal areas, similar to Search Engine users. Self-reported ownership of essays was the lowest in the LLM group and the highest in the Brain-only group. LLM users also struggled to accurately quote their own work. While LLMs offer immediate convenience, our findings highlight potential cognitive costs. Over four months, LLM users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels. These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI's role in learning.

tl;dr billionaires are the stupidest people

“In October, Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, said the solution to the climate crisis was to use more energy: Since we aren’t going to meet our climate goals anyway, we should pump energy into AI that might one day evolve to solve the problem for us.”

"He tells me that the tech billionaires he knows are in fact staging a sort of siege on the American government, building what he calls 'a new techno-feudalism in which there’s a patchwork quilt of these billionaires who can deliver everything that society needs.'"

“Everybody tries to make it about the money. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about socialization and control.… They would like to see an end to democratic liberalism and constitutional republics.… They view laws not as laws, but as conventions meant to be disrupted in an attempt to right the ship.”

Excellent piece. We need to be sharpening the guillotines. This is an existential threat to the idea of democracy and equality. Tech Feudalism is here and we're the serfs.

I think I just accidentally recruited a random American in this Starbucks to go to the protest

Stop using Big Tech to organize your protests! They're part of the authoritarian surveillance and oppression as well.

Action speaks louder than words. Danish Minister of Digitalisation @carolinestage.bsky.social wants to phase out Microsoft from the ministry to reduce the dependency on US tech. This will be a long process. But actual action, not just talking points, is noteworthy!
@rrb Ok, I was trying to confirm that Carolyn Adams Garcia was both a computer genius and the founder of second city, but then realized I misread that sentence. Never mind. 😀 🤦🏻‍♀️ @Rycaut @RickiTarr

Seems #Danmark is already doing well

@jurgentje Is it possible to see changes in progress?

@Oleksii @jalager @claesdevreese.bsky.social I did a new scan on the Danish cities. Notice though that these are only part of the truth. Cities running a domestic or EU server could perfectly be using a mail proxy or a locally hosted exchange server. For example, I see signs in the TXT record that Samsoe probably also uses Microsoft (just picked a random one). Notice: THE OTHER COUNTRIES ARE NOT UPDATED http://jurgen.gaeremyn.be/map-2025-06-12.html

@Oleksii @jalager @claesdevreese.bsky.social also I would like to point out that a badly hosted local system also requires the needed skills. I don't think every little town should run and manage its own mail server. Let professionals do that.

@claesdevreese.bsky.social Pandora's f#@&#&@ suit case has been opened.

@claesdevreese.bsky.social

There is no reason for 80% of all computers in use today to have to use #windows

Ubuntu will run faster, better and more secure and as someone else pointed out #LibreOffice can do just about everything #MicrosoftOffice can without the security, stability and enshitifcation that M$ has added in over the years.

You don't need new computers, even the old ones will run like brand new. Ubuntu is free, LibreOffice is free, Browsers are free.

@kbsez @claesdevreese.bsky.social Exactly!

I don't think any government should ever use Windows. It's a matter of national security. Especially since Microsoft released the Recall function.

If the product doesn't satisfy the needs then it should be replaced.

@claesdevreese.bsky.social
Expecting them to replace Microsoft with Azure.

Lat time, they replaced Microsoft Office with open standards, they then lobbied to have Microsoft Office recognised as an open standard.

@claesdevreese.bsky.social oh well....tilgengæld vil hun ikke åbne op for en fælles kommunal strategi!
