@nette I know but alas there is no equivalent (yet) in terms of privacy, security, and features. This is harm reduction for now (compared to Big Tech), but hopefully competition will ramp up soon... I'd much rather people use Proton than keep using Gmail.

There is an equivalent Tuta. Proton is highly unethical and lies. The idea of them being "better" then big tech is what keeps them afloat.

If people keep using Proton it will signal that what they are doing is okay. Proton is a horrible company that I actively want to see fail.

@sergiodomeyko Back in December, the Proton CEO seemed to support the Trump administration in his personal opinions, which was extremely disappointing (and incredibly naive in regards to privacy regulation).

However, Proton is still the best option in terms of privacy, security, and features, and nothing points to this being diminished in any ways.

Sadly, there isn't a strong alternative (yet), and Proton is still a much more ethical and secure choice than Google, Microsoft, or Apple products, despite its CEO's horrible political opinions (like all other CEOs it seems these days *sigh*).

I personally still use Proton, and will still recommend it until there's a more ethical equivalent around. Harm reduction must come first.

Things such as subject lines, timestamps, sender/recipient and some headers aren’t end‑to‑end encrypted meaning Proton can hand them over under a court order ([redirect9.com][1]). It’s been compelled to log and surrender IP addresses most famously in the 2021 French activist case prompting policy changes only after backlash ([welivesecurity.com][2]).

Proton deflects criticism by claiming β€œGoogle is worse,” framing transparency fixes as grudging compliance rather than ethical responsibility. This framing misleads users especially people who care about privacy into thinking Proton offers sanctuary, when in reality its metadata leaks can be used against them.

I would rather someone use a tool that they know isn't safe or can easily tell isn't. Then one that pretends to but in reality isn't.

The official reddit for Protonmail is full of Nazis and fascists that are not blocked or removed, arguing things like "white awakening is coming, brown people won't survive". Protonmail complies to Swiss hate speech laws in their services, but have no issues with it on their official reddit.

Also around Xmas 2024 the CEO openly supported the GOP, as did their official reddit account. After a backlash all comments by Andy Yen were scrubbed.
