I am not open to your ahistorical take on Google Chat and XMPP.

Google didn't do anything wrong by using an open standard.

They didn't do anything wrong by building a good interface that people liked to use.

And they didn't do anything wrong by disconnecting from the network when the spam and harassment outweighed the benefit to their users.

We, the XMPP community, failed to capitalize on success by diversifying the network. It's our own fault not enough nodes were there.

@jerry Do you have any thoughts on the pros/cons of news/media companies running their own instance. I've worked for a number and Twitter has never been the 'engagement spinner' that other social media platforms are, but on the other hand a lot of journalists and editors like(d) the brevity of it and used it a lot. I'm kind of betting my current employers SRE and community moderation teams aren't up for another potential cesspit, but you never know!

What's Calckey?

ChatGPT

Calckey is a new and open social media platform that allows anyone to join a federated community and become part of the Fediverse. This network of interconnected yet independent servers enables communication with millions of users already on platforms compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, like Mastodon, Pixelfed, Akkoma, Friendica, Peertube, and others, including Calckey itself.

Users on Calckey have control over their data, which isn't owned by any single company. In this community, server administrators are responsible for moderation and ensuring safety. The platform provides tools for users to block, mute, or report anyone potentially harassing them. The Fediverse, in general, is considered safer and friendlier than most mainstream social media because moderation is handled by real individuals who care about their communities rather than bots or overworked employees.

Calckey is an open-source micro/macroblogging platform designed to be enjoyable and fun. It includes features like emoji reactions, quotes, multi-answer polls, and more, with a focus on privacy, accessibility, and smooth operation with other Fediverse platforms. It encourages the formation of distinct communities with their own rules and moderation, while still allowing users to connect with others from any server through federation.

Calckey's development began in 2022 as a soft fork of Misskey, starting as a personal project of an individual known as ThatOneCalculator or Kainoa Kanter. As more users started noticing Calckey and getting involved, it evolved into a community-driven project and became a standalone project, no longer based on Misskey's latest releases. Since then, it has added unique features like account migration, a new layout for viewing posts and browsing threads, and it's currently working on implementing Mastodon API compatibility and post editing, with more improvements planned for the future.

Calckey is a global project built by a diverse group of people, including those who identify as LGBTQ+ or allies. The project aims to create a non-toxic, welcoming, and inclusive community where everyone can co-exist and work together smoothly. It is under heavy development and always open to improvements and new ideas from its community. The team encourages participation in various ways, including reporting bugs, making suggestions, discussing new ideas, translating in other languages, or by submitting code in coordination with the core team. The team also encourages users to spread the word about Calckey as a free and enjoyable alternative to mainstream, corporate social media.

Why should I use Calckey instead of Mastodon?

ChatGPT
The decision between Calckey and Mastodon, like many technology choices, depends on your specific needs, interests, and values. Here are a few potential reasons you might prefer Calckey:

Community: Calckey is built by a global, diverse community of individuals, including those who identify as LGBTQ+ or allies. The platform aims to create a non-toxic, welcoming, and inclusive community where everyone can co-exist and work together smoothly. If you identify with these values or are looking for a community that strongly prioritizes inclusivity, Calckey might be the right choice for you.

Interface and User Experience: Calckey pays extra attention to the design and user-friendliness of its interface. It seeks to offer an enjoyable and fun experience with features like emoji reactions, quotes, multi-answer polls, and more. If these features appeal to you and you prioritize an intuitive, user-friendly interface, you might prefer Calckey.

Community-Driven Development: Calckey started as a personal project and has evolved into a community-driven project. This means that the users of Calckey have a significant say in the direction of the platform's development. If you like the idea of being involved in the development of the social media platform you use, Calckey might be a good fit.
We haven’t yet made a decision regarding whether https://calckey.social will federate with #Barcelona.

I’m of the belief that there needs to be a “lobby” where new people try out software to decide whether they like it, and federation is important for spreading word of mouth.

On the other hand,
#Meta has done horrible things to people, and I will never be their friend so long as Zuck and co. run the show.

I question
@film_girl’s assumptions that in order to decentralize we must roll out the welcome mat to the biggest centralizing force on the Internet.

But this isn’t just about centralization, it’s about a well-known peddled of evil arriving on the scene. And I’m not being hyperbolic here. Meta is to social media what Dow is to chemicals.

To everyone who expresses concerns about Meta—you’re right!

Wow, now that's some fascienating #neuroscience: "the unique insect-specific oskar gene plays a role in long-term memory through expression in adult neural stem cells. We show that oskar is expressed and required in stem cells of the adult cricket brain for long-term memory. Further, we provide evidence that oskar’s role in long-term memory involves regulation by the transcription factor Creb"

@atomicpoet I’m not suggesting or even encouraging anyone to roll out a welcome mat! I am saying that making knee-jerk announcements about preemptive bans and encouraging others to do so too is stupid and bad and against the goals that many of those same people claim to have, which is to encourage the usage of decentralized protocols.
People make fun of vi because it’s hard to get out, but it says right there: “esc : w q”. Whereas getting out of emacs apparently requires the gradual realization over the course of decades that all of your heroes are monsters and the ideological basis of the liberatory movements you championed in your youth are inherently flawed, and they are futile exercises
