Admin mandated systems post of the month:

Caltrain display process consumed all the memory on the train, and now there is no more to go around.

Turning the train off and then back on once it reaches SF, should fix the problem.

“Writing a good prompt requires an understanding of the subject being explored. The prompter needs to know the context of the prompt. The development of that kind of understanding is exactly what a reliance on AI impedes. “The most useful deployment of current and near-future generative AI in research and expression absolutely requires that you already know a great deal,” writes Swarthmore history professor Timothy Burke, but the way the technology is actually being used “is brutally short-circuiting the processes by which people gain enough knowledge and expressive proficiency to be able to use the potential of generative AI correctly.” The tool’s deskilling effect extends to the use of the tool itself.”

I guess the only acceptable way to absolve yourself of a bagel crime is to make a confession in the metropolitan diary section of the NYT. 🛐

PSA: City Arts & Lectures has just opened the presale for the fall season if you're a member (Individual is $120 for the season).

I'm very excited to see Samin Nosrat launch her new book: https://www.cityarts.net/event/good-things-an-evening-with-samin-nosrat/

and also, looking forward to this conversation and slide show featuring photos of cargo ships going into the Port of Oakland (one of my favorite views when crossing the Bay Bridge): https://www.cityarts.net/event/richard-misrach-rebecca-solnit/

@ricci this was the bowl I prepared last night. I knew how I was going to cook up the fish and the rest was a real "build the plane while flying it" endeavour
@ricci y'know, I have everything in my pantry and freezer inventoried, I should try asking a LLM what I should make for dinner and see what happens!
@dan reminds me of webtender.com which I am very pleased to see still exists and has not changed a bit
@dan but really your own vibes are enough to cook with why would you need artificial ones
@ricci for privacy reasons, I would obviously run this on my home inference server which only has enough VRAM to run very small models, so I suspect it would basically be taking the webtender approach and I'd wind up simmering beans in windshield washer fluid and topping it with label tape or something.
@dan @ricci knowing your home you’re gonna end up with a NIC or two in your salad
@atsuzaki @ricci people keep telling me it's good to have fiber in your diet...
@dan @ricci it’s a very important thing to remember that LLMs do not have taste buds and have never eaten food
@kevinriggle @ricci I should also point out that my ChatGPT prompt is "Wrong answers only."
@dan @kevinriggle That's everybody's, they just don't know it
@kevinriggle @dan I know a Mormon guy who has never had alcohol but makes great cocktails

@kevinriggle @dan @ricci Also, be careful if the LLM tries to convince you that you need cake.

@dan @ricci oh god I unironically want to do this now

@kf @ricci I tried this and it actually worked pretty well!

The first ones were pretty straightforward, so I asked it to come up with some fancier ones based on whatever it thinks my signature ingredients are.

(and I disabled the "wrong answers only" prompt)

@kf @ricci one of which (albacore poke) was, in fact, what I was planning to make tonight!
