UK Midlands. Would like some public transport in my town so I don't have to drive everywhere. Was here before it was cool </hipster> (well, not *here* but the fediverse in general).

Work in IT, shoot target rifle to an occasionally high standard. Mediocre photographer, sometime astronomer when the clouds bless me with their absence. Trying Mojeek search as a daily driver.

I firmly believe that all 14 year olds should surreptitiously be given Pratchett by someone that isn't a parent.

Especially if they live in a household where they have to hide it because it contains witches.

They are books that teach you how to think, even in the face of extreme authority.

This is my story. I would be a much worse person without having Pratchett books in my life.

@pluralistic I don’t like to bother, but this is EXTREMELY YOUR SHIT. I’m reading it and shocked you’re not one of the blurbs. #Attensity is well designed and has the delicious new concept of #HumanFracking.

Also the book is gorgeous inside

The Privacy ‘Zealots’ Were Right: Ad Tech’s Infrastructure Was Always A Risk

The US government wants to use digital ad infrastructure for the exact type of surveillance critics have long warned about. We should have seen this coming.

So there is a way, sort of. If I save the image out of WhatsApp into the camera roll, the Photos app has "live text" which detects and parses text and QR codes.

The sheer bandwidth and storage that's tied up in transmitting short text strings around the world. Jeez.

Colleague currently at a trade show. Being given press kits by exhibitors which are usually a business card with a QR code (and no URL).

He is sending me photos of these cards in WhatsApp.

Reading QR codes is part of the camera app, so I can't (easily) interrogate the image directly (I'm sure there's a way).

Current workflow:
* Airdrop image to laptop
* Use phone camera to scan QR code on laptop screen
* Airdrop the resulting URL to the laptop and retrieve the press kit

Gimme a f-ing URL. Even if it's a bit.ly

May Lent bring you as much patience as whoever is working Bedford council's social media

Let’s all start calling X, FB, IG, TikTok, etc the “legacy corporate social media”. Make them sound sad and old and behind the times.

Lots of fun, old winter Olympic photos here. I stumbled across them while trying to find images of the crazy West German luge helmets from 1976.

I was stuck in bed with flu or something during those Olympics. I have very vivid memories of seeing the sci-fi aero gear - all in lurid colors, despite watching it all on a 10" B&W TV. Seems the Internet has preserved almost zero memory of these events.

Happy Friday.
