It's a work-in-progress: comments welcome!

Unhype Artificial 'Intelligence'! A proposal to replace the deceiving terminology of AI.

Artificial Intelligence as a field of research and also its criticism is dominated by notions such as ‘intelligence’, ‘learning’ or ‘neuronal’. This paper discusses how the use of anthropomorphising language is fueling AI hype. AI hype involves many promises, such as that ‘AI can be creative’, or ‘AI can solve world hunger’. This hype is problematic since it covers up the negative consequences of AI use. Instead, the author proposes to use alternative terminology such as: ‘Automated Pattern Recognition’, ‘Machine Conditioning’, or ‘Weighted Network’.

@jik I've been collating a list of long-form stuff but there's https://pivot-to-ai.com/ for more pithy debunking.
Pivot to AI

It can't be that stupid, you must be prompting it wrong

Pivot to AI
@jik I'm shure you heard of the DAIR institute with @emilymbender @timnitGebru @alex and many others? Just listen to their Mystery AI Hype Theater podcast.
⇒ Please help me find #GenAI truth-telling sites! ⇐
In the past I've come across several websites that effectively debunk #GenerativeAI hype.
However, now that I actually need them, to help me make the case at work for strong oversight of the company's GenAI use, I can't find any of them.
It seems like no matter what search terms and search engine I use, I get garbage search results (hype, indeed!).
What are your go-to websites for debunking #AI hype?

@jik a bit long-form, but a good one: https://thebullshitmachines.com/
Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines: Introduction

A free online humanities course about how to learn and work and thrive in an AI world.

Did you know that Microsoft just turns Copilot writing assist on for webpages in Microsoft Edge?
So like, if you type in edit boxes, it just... gets sent to Microsoft? Straight up?
And this is enabled by default?
So first, what the actual hell? Second, why is nobody talking about this? How the hell is right now the first time I find out about this?
Bay Area Design is promoting "AI design workshops," as AI is a fascist endeavor, I must assume the Bay Area Design community to be a fascist project as well.

I am loving watching the vibecoding bubble bursting and reforming in real time. It turns out it is ludicrously expensive to have humongous billion parameter models generate a whole library of code in a loop hundreds of times per hour rather than, you know, "writing code." Cursor's pricing model finally started to try and operate at less of a loss and people revolted since they could no longer autogenerate code for 8 hours solid, and now Amazon is trying to capture the runoff with a first-hit-free cursor replacement.

Very funny how, to me, FOSS is about creating a credible bulwark of power so that we aren't at the mercy of information giants, but for vibe coders it's like a "how can I get locked in and get got as deeply as possible" speedrun.

Knowing how to tie a useful knot is a skill that doesn't get much attention outside of sailing and rock climbing, but although I do neither of those things, I like learning new knots. They come in handy in the garden, the kitchen, and any time I have to move something on or in a vehicle.

If you'd like to learn to be more handy with rope and string, I suggest this website, where you can learn new knots. You can easily go step by step, reverse, or even re-orient the knot to see how it looks from another angle. It's called "Animated Knots." They even have neckties!

Animated Knots is the world's leading site for learning how to tie knots of any kind. From Boating Knots, Fishing Knots and Climbing Knots to how to tie a Tie, or even Surgical Knots — we’ve got it covered.

Public statement on the Australian govt's intention to "adopt a definition of antisemitism that mendaciously defines criticism of Israel as a form of antisemitism."

"The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) calls on the Australian government to remove Special Envoy for Antisemitism Jillian Segal from her position"...

... "following revelations that Segal’s family donated to.. a far-right group that has promoted.. anti-Palestinian racism."

@DrALJONES

Some point, they will render the term "antisemitism" meaningless.

As they are also doing with "terrorism".

@Gigi

@EricLawton

These words are becoming the modern day equivalent of "blasphemy".

Segal is a foreign agent pushing the desires and manipulations of a foreign government.

She should be deported and banned from the country.

@ami

Do you happen to have a source/s that I can use?

@DrALJONES
Nothing other than the demands of the Israeli government and her personal history. She is the former president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

Segal has long been an advocate for Israel in Australia. In November 2023, she co-signed a statement condemning foreign minister Penny Wong and the Labor party for calling for Israel to "cease the attacking of hospitals", and its support for a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire.
