Naw man, ask any marginalized person, or for that matter just look at your own experiences and the discourse environment you were raised in - there is a sense in America that marginalized people are in fact unreliable arbiters and narrators of their own oppression. They're too close to it, too emotionally invested, and thus their testimonies and experiences are open for interpretation and adjudication by enlightened, dispassionate Very Serious People who are NOT targets of that oppression.
You know back in my day, we had static analysis tooling that would give you exactly this kind of feedback, except it was correct. Now we have shit which only looks at the vibes of the source text and does no semantic analysis whatsoever, so of course it's just fucking wrong

Sent a pull request to Audacity fixing a crash bug I'd been running into frequently. The cause was an out-of-bounds memmove. Classic C++ areas.

Anyway I got a fucking copilot review on my PR which left two comments, both completely wrong, one of which suggesting I reintroduce the out of bounds memory access. I'm furious!

@tinker in Australia we call this everyday democracy (OK it's actually called "preferential voting") and uhhh, sad to report that it still hasn't saved us from a broken 2 party system where both parties are wholesale selling our country to mining interests and bootlicking the US fascist ethnostate

Oh, and the EFF leans the same way on "screw your creativity, big tech is right on GenAI".

Which probably shouldn't be surprising given some of their previous "screw the humans, let's be absolutist" stances on other legal arguments.

How We Think About Copyright and AI Art

Artists are understandably concerned about the possibility that automatic image generators like Stable Diffusion will undercut the market for their work. We live in a society that does not support people who are automated out of a job, and being a visual artist is an already precarious career.In...

Holy #surveillance hell, Batman.

Let me get this straight:

First, they feed your video, which is already stored in their cloud, into an #AI transformer to write descriptions.

Then they feed your descriptions into a pattern learning system (ML, maybe?) to figure out your patterns and habits.

All of this is stored in the cloud. So they not only have your video, but a narrative about your habits, ready to be exfiltrated, monetized, and shared with law enforcement.

Amazon's Ring can now use AI to 'learn the routines of your residence'

Fairly often on here I see people sharing stories about #PublicLibraries being like a secret cheat code around late-capitalist extraction and the collapse of communitarian values we see every day in a world built on individualism, consumption and individualistic consumption. Here’s another one:

After arranging a drag queen story hour at her very rural library, out of the abundant depth of her caring and curiosity and without a great deal of political context, and not quite knowing what she had gotten into when chuds with sidearms and bibles showed up to block the door with their pickups, and being very appreciative when, truly spontaneously as we’d never organized together before, a much larger number of anarcho inflected antifascists of all flavors appeared from across the region to help keep the day safe (the queens were extremely sparkly and the kids were extremely giggly), the librarian was so appreciative and got so curious (again, as librarians do) that she now wants to put together a series of intro workshops around topics like de-escalation, mutual aid, protest safety, community defense and consensus-based autonomous organizing.

So, tl;dr.. some christofascists showed up to be mean and dumb about queer and trans people and scare little kids and now the targeted library is starting to look a little like an anarchist infoshop πŸ–€πŸ˜‚πŸ–€

@karenhao I even said that there is a higher chance of me wanting to go back to Google, the company that fired me, than OpenAI. I've never been to fully articulate why I had such an aversion to them, but once you read Empire of AI, you'll understand.

Now, Anthropic is being sold as the benevolent alternative to OpenAI, just like OpenAI was sold as the benevolent alternative to Google back in 2015. Don't buy it.

Please read the book which is based on years of meticulous reporting by Karen.
