I am just watching a video on knot theory. in the begining of the video it is stated that: "Of course we now know that atoms are not knonts."

Which raises a question in my head: How do we know, that atoms are not knots?

We clearly do know that atoms are not knots because they are made out of even smaler particles. But how do we know for sure, that these smaler particles are not made out of knots?

TIL that Frank Vigor Morley (1899–1980) published a paper in 1924 showing how to knot two strips of paper into a regular hexagon and one strip into a regular heptagon (and generalised into a regular polygon of any odd number of sides). https://www.origamiheaven.com/historyanoteonknots.htm
