Retro game reviews, hardware, and editorials since 1998. Founded by two teenagers at a lunch table who thought gaming coverage had gone soft. Recovering a 28-year archive and publishing it properly. Four editorial series. No sponsors. No advertisers. No scores adjusted for access. Just the games and what we actually think. pocg.net #retrogaming #gaming #retro
A digital game is a license, not a thing you own. No trade, no resale, and when the store closes it can just be gone.
Xbox built the best preservation promise in the business: buy a game, keep a game, across four console generations. Now Microsoft calls that a "subsidy," and the people who made the promise have left the building.
Buy physical where you can. Back up what matters. Don't mistake a promise for a guarantee.

The SuperStation One is a pure FPGA rebuild of the original PlayStation. Intel Cyclone V chip, no software emulation layer, and dual PS1 SNAC ports for original controllers and memory cards, plug a DualShock straight in.

If you care about timing and input latency on real hardware, this one belongs on your radar.

Xbox reportedly closing Compulsion Games, and the leak says Ninja Theory and Double Fine are also on the chopping block. This isn't just industry churn, Double Fine has been one of the last big studios making the kind of odd, author-driven games that defined the late '90s / early 2000s PC scene. Losing that feels like another piece of that era getting erased. #RetroGaming #DoubleFine #Xbox #GamePreservation

The unreleased Xbox Live Arcade remaster of GoldenEye 007 is finally playable on PC, and it's a native port, not emulation. SunJaycy’s GoldenEye Recomp v1.0 static recompilation delivers 60fps, widescreen, and online multiplayer. Finally, the cancelled 360 upgrade gets a clean, lasting release. In the late '90s, before POCG, my gaming name was born in a school computer lab full of friends: Dave (who co-founded this site), Phillip, and the LAN crew. That handle stuck harder than any save file. I wrote about why a name in a LAN party isn’t just a tag. https://pocg.net/editorial/a-name-to-play-by/ #RetroGaming #PCGaming #LANParty #Editorial
Harbour Masters, the group that brought us native PC ports of Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask, just announced their next target: Banjo-Kazooie. The port, built on the 2024 Lighthouse decompilation, will include a randomizer and online co-op, and it's dropping in July. This is the exact kind of preservation work I love to see. https://pocg.net/news/banjo-kazooie-pc-port-harbour-masters-july-2026/ #RetroGaming #BanjoKazooie #Nintendo64 #PCGaming

I've been tracking delistings for years, and Capcom's latest move adds Dragon's Dogma 2 to the list. The Deluxe Edition and a bundle of time-saving microtransaction DLC vanish from digital stores June 24 at 5 PM PT. If you care about owning what you paid for, grab it now. Physical copies exist, but the Deluxe edition extras are digital-only. Another win for disc rot, I guess.

A SEGA Rally DS prototype has surfaced after 20 years. DC Studios made it as a tech demo in 2006, not a real game. It's a rough curio, but preservationists have now dumped and documented it. Another reminder that preserving even the half-baked prototypes matters. #SEGARally #NintendoDS #GamePreservation #RetroGaming https://pocg.net/news/lost-sega-rally-ds-prototype-discovered-2026/
Sega's finally listening: new games for Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Jet Set Radio are on the way. I've been saying this for years: Sega's back catalog is a goldmine, and they're finally digging in. Microsoft is reportedly exploring spinning off Xbox into a separate company, which could be a wholly owned subsidiary or a joint venture. If you care about retro gaming, you should be paying attention. The Xbox backwards compatibility program already feels like it's on life support; a spin-off could mean the plug gets pulled entirely.
