was watching the Double Fine PsychOdyssey documentary tonight and it reminded me of a super embarrassing story from the year i met my wife-to-be, over a decade ago
back in the early 2010s i was married to someone else. we were excited about the Double Fine Adventure kickstarter, and backed it immediately.
a few months later, we were going through a divorce. our kickstarted game arrived in the mail, and like all of our possessions, it became just another line on a spreadsheet to divide between us. she took a pile of le creuset dishes. i took the double fine adventure game (Broken Age).
for the next two years, i didn't want to think about anything connected to my ex. Broken Age collected dust on the shelf.
i eventually met someone else. we fell in love. most nights in bed, we'd play an adventure game together. a lot of them were lucasarts games. Sam & Max. Day of the Tentacle.
one night i remembered the copy of Broken Age on the shelf. "Hey honey, wanna play something new?"
we stayed up all night and managed to finish the entire game in one go. neither of us had ever been in a game's credits before, or even knew anyone who had. i wanted to impress her.
"Hey, let's watch the credits! I got a backer credit for helping fund it."
it took 5 minutes to finally see my name in the list. except - it wasn't just my name. it was myself and my ex wife's. 😬
i turned bright red and my girlfriend couldn't stop laughing. the next morning, i quietly hammered out a message to Double Fine's support staff, asking for a change in the game's credits.
this was their reply 😅
