You know, I could write a whole blog post about this—and I might—but I think we need to start addressing the very likely possibility that the *entire thesis* that “UI should get out of the way” and “apps should focus on content” is wrong.

Apps aren’t just for looking at photos or videos. They’re for navigating through these things, organizing them, editing them. The tools to do those things should not get out of the way. They should be clearly defined and separate from the content.

Free Certificate Authority Let's Encrypt has ended its email notification service that warns users of expiring certificates.

The company blamed this on rising costs.

Expiration Notification Service Has Ended

Since its inception, Let’s Encrypt has been sending expiration notification emails to subscribers that have provided an email address to us via the ACME API. This service ended on June 4, 2025. The decision to end the service is the result of the following factors: Over the past 10 years more and more of our subscribers have been able to put reliable automation into place for certificate renewal. Providing expiration notification emails means that we have to retain millions of email addresses connected to issuance records.

Introducing Scorekard! Our new imperfect sans inspired by an old baseball scoring card. Upper/lowercase, 3 weights, diacritics, Danmade line wandering, etc. Read more about Scorekard in the Notebook: https://simplebits.com/notebook/introducing-scorekard/

Prediction: There are going to be so many bad UIs because developers look at the shader output and think “that's so cool!” — and then they never think about the usability of that glass surface.

Actually, that's not a prediction — it's a promise. The same thing happened when Aqua introduced transparency to the masses at the turn of the century. So little alpha, so little thought.

On today's hardware, making things _look_ cool isn't too hard. What's going to be hard is making things _work_ cool.

Hell yeah, macOS Tahoe adds an option to block apps from putting items in the menu bar (System Settings > Menu Bar).Goodbye forever, Creative Cloud!

Meta is under investigation for a privacy violation called "localhost tracking." This process allowed Meta to link users' real identities to their web browsing activity, even if they used VPNs, incognito mode, and deleted cookies.

The process involves the Facebook or Instagram app listening for incoming traffic on local network ports and exchanging information with Meta's tracking scripts in users' web browsers.

“Localhost tracking” explained. It could cost Meta 32 billion.
