Retired from architectural practice in Hampshire, UK, but still busy — with photography (strictly amateur), occasional blogging (mostly skepticism and counter-apologetics), fiction writing (SF, short and long-form), and assisting with local Skeptics in the Pub. Interests include:

Yann LeCun is one of the "godfathers of AI." He must be wicked smart, because he won the Turing Prize in 2018 (together with the other two "godfathers," Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton ). The prize...

@malwaretech Apparently ChatGPT has no knowledge of anything post 2021, so maybe it's in some kind of time-loop.
Twitter suspends Mastodon account, prevents sharing links

On Dec 16, Twitter suspended our @joinmastodon account after we shared a link to the newly registered Mastodon account of @ElonJet, an account that broadcasts public flight path data of Elon Musk’s private jet, which was previously suspended from Twitter itself. At the same time, accounts of multiple journalists from major publications such as CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, as well as various independent journalists, were likewise suspended for either linking to the account itself or talking about the event.

Alfred Russel Wallace :: Dr James Williams :: Winchester Skeptics :: 2022-12-13

Dr James Williams, a lecturer in education at the University of Sussex, talks about Alfred Wallace, who famously sent Charles Darwin an outline of the theory of evolution by natural selection before Darwin had completed his major treatise on the subject, prompting the publication of On the Origin of Species. Did Darwin really steal the idea from Wallace? Was Wallace even aware of Darwin’s work on species and how does history see the two men? In this talk, James examines the facts surrounding Wallace’s work on evolution and some of the more interesting episodes in Wallace’s life that saw him oppose Darwin in an infamous case of spiritualist fraud that ended in the Old Bailey. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was a man of many talents – an explorer, collector, naturalist, geographer, anthropologist and political commentator. Most famously, he had the revolutionary idea of evolution by natural selection entirely independently of Charles Darwin. James is a senior lecturer in science education at the University of Sussex. His PhD looked at the development and inclusion of the Nature of Science in the UK National Curriculum for science from 1988 – 2010. He is an elected member (FGS) of The Geological Society of London, a member of the Association for Science Education (ASE), where he chairs the Publications Specialist Group. He is also a member of the Society of Authors and a member of the Editorial Board – School Science Review. He has appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live Investigates. He has written extensively for The Conversation, for TES (formerly known as the Times Educational Supplement) and for local newspapers. He has research expertise in Creationism and Evolution in Education, History and Philosophy of Science, Initial Teacher Education, Science Education, Teaching ‘the nature of science’ & ‘the scientific method’, as well as Teaching and Learning.

"iTunes 4.9" was the first version of what's now "Apple Podcasts" that actually served podcasts via RSS. It was a great day when iTunes 4.9 launched and some pioneer podcasters had their feeds already in Apple's directory, and some didn't. I was one of the fortunate (and not a little smug about it) — my podcast The Rev Up Review was one of those in there from launch.
