Past Present Projects
The protection and preservation of the dunes is the underlying message of this project. The artist’s process will not involve disturbing or removing any natural materials from the environment. Monroe Isenberg is interested in the ability of American Beach Grass to build dunes and shape sand–essentially sculpting the landscape. His week-long residency project visually activates the creative potential of Beach Grass through a process whereby the motion of Beach Grass in wind creates drawings.

We are pleased to announce an artist residency for Monroe Isenberg at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware, from January 5-12. Monroe is an interdisciplinary artist whose work compels viewers to think deeply about their relationship to the environment. During this residency, he will create work inspired by American Beach Grass, the dune-building species that thrives in the shifting sands of the Atlantic coastal dunes.

🧵

The animals and architectural elements are rendered in a range of styles, referencing ways that nature has historically been portrayed, as well as the ideologies which informed those practices.”
Talia Greene statement on this series: “My current body of work is a continuation of an ongoing project called Precarious Balance, in which I strip birds and other fauna of their natural surroundings, a consequence of diminishing ecosystems. Extinct species, predators, and other animals intermingle in unsustainable formations. Perching on each other, and atop ruins of human habitation, their positions are suggestive of either cooperation through sacrifice, or a scramble for dominance.

Talia Greene, Precarious Balance, 2015, archival pigment prints. Currently on view in Natural History at Past Present Projects Gallery. Open Thurs-Sat 12-5 at the Bok Building in South Philly.
