@austinkocher I think you're forgetting surveillance tech. And ad tech.
@ErikJonker @geopolitics As a US citizen, it's very very hard to take this seriously. I'm much more inclined to the view that this is distraction, intended to give folks something to waste their energy on rather than resisting Trump's moves elsewhere. Yet he's nothing if not opportunistic, I can imagine a half hearted feint turning into something real if he thinks it's working.
@futurebird Which one of these is "I will sit and slowly comb your chin hair with my claws until you rub my jaw." I'm not sure if she sees it as an exchange or a threat.
@josh If you've spent hours trying to find a command line way to perform a task for which there's a simple gui interface, press 3.
@Free_Press I'm struggling to understand the strategic aim here, or for Russia in the Baltic. Is it just to be a nuisance and crank up tension, or is another purpose served? Does this kind of thing actually impact coms over more than the short term?
@apodoxus This is something I often think about. The complex processes involved in bread making, pickling, fermentation etc, all without out any concept of microorganisms. The level of trial and error that must have taken, and the ability to pass high fidelity information about the processes on to descendents. It's pretty mind blowing.
@jackwilliambell @rafial That's what makes the great vowel shift so interesting, because it didn't follow the normal ways sounds shift due to laziness and shortcuts. It's like suddenly everybody woke up one day (over the course of centuries) and said, "Let's all make extra effort to pronounce our words in this weird new way," and they all did.
@futurebird Obviously, adjusting to cooler weather is nigh impossible if your workplace starts winter by turning on furnaces and blasting everybody with 75 degree heat at the beginning of winter.

@futurebird Two keys for cold weather comfort that don't cost much: layers and turning down your thermostat.

Layers are key both because you can adjust them (sweat now and you'll freeze later) and because the air gap between them is insulating. Water and wind resistant on the outside, wool or fleece under that.

The thermostat thing is more controversial, but my experience is that a week of enduring uncomfortably cool indoor temps helps me to adjust to cooler temps for rest of the winter.

@dansinker I'm a big believer in oatmeal. If you're not a fan of the texture, a lot of people make "creamy" oatmeal, but that isn't the only way. Cook it on high heat with less water without stirring, and you can have a nutty, textured breakfast within 15 minutes. Happy to provide more detailed instructions if desired.
