Query for @histodons: how do you talk with your students/what guidance do you provide re: building arguments with counter-factual proposals and using the conditional tense?
I’m teaching H.C. Richardson’s 2005 article on Reconstruction, “A Marshall Plan for the South,” and she frames much of her analysis through potential alternative pasts that “would have” or “could have” transformed the post-Confederacy in a more prosperous and less white supremacist place.
Always looking for ideas!
@histodons I’m excited to see @[email protected]’s new book this next year, as it seems like that might offer something ideal on this topic. In the meantime, I’m happy w any other suggestions!
Alright @histodons #histodons: what’s the best short-ish article and chapter you like to teach on #Reconstruction? Ideally, the reading would offer an interesting methodology and/or use of evidence as I’m hope it’ll also serve as a model for strong historical writing and analysis. Another excellent (though now slightly dated) haiku from my final exams. #histodons #historyhaikus #warof1812 #gradingfun
Sometimes student haikus on final exams are so entertaining as to make the grading feel a little less of a slog. #histodons #grading #haiku #studenthaikus #grading

Hey #histodons. I’m doing a directed readings with a student next semester on “slavery, memory, + public history.”

We’ve been working on a list of relevant books/articles, and I’d love any suggestions you all have.
