I’m teaching H.C. Richardson’s 2005 article on Reconstruction, “A Marshall Plan for the South,” and she frames much of her analysis through potential alternative pasts that “would have” or “could have” transformed the post-Confederacy in a more prosperous and less white supremacist place.
