There are lots of people (myself included) keeping each other company on there, with all kinds of posts from hot chocolate recipes to historical photos to horses covered in tinsel to just general thoughts and chatter.

You can use the hashtag however you want, serious or fun, and anyone using the tag is welcoming of replies and discussion so it's a great way of striking up a conversation.

Vive La Difference!

I used to open #birdshite each morning, my loins girded for battle. I had followers I refused to block just because they disagreed w me (I can take criticism - real & bullshit). While part of me (if I'm honest) enjoyed the cage match battles, part of me dreaded it, too.

I do not feel anything like that here. The very first thing I saw here today (I boosted it earlier) was a fantastic 4 hour time lapse photo taken of a beach in New Zealand. Breathtaking. That colored not only what I subsequently tooted, but how I'm feeling to this moment. Kinda exuberant. Uplifted.

Connected.

Wow.

Someone else here put it this way (I sure wish I'd thought of it). If #birdshite is "social media", #mastodon is SOCIABLE media. Turns out there's a huge difference.

In my three weeks of being a self-appointed Walmart greeter here on #Mastodon, I've noticed people looking for a connection. Just someone to follow them.

So I follow them. Why? Because it costs me nothing, other than time to say hello and click the "+" button.

Many of these folks are shy. Often they're not big posters anyway. So they're not crowding my Home timeline.

And when they do post?  So cool. And I think, "There's my new friend! I wonder what they have to say?"

Imagine you're a visually impaired Mastodon user and your screen reader encounters a post that says something like "A stunning view I saw this morning" or "This is hilarious." But the image is the equivalent of what you see below: a blank. Wouldn't it be frustrating to encounter post after post like that?

Describe images. It's an act of love. Describe them as you would to a dear friend you were talking to on the phone.

Quick little tip: You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon.

All links on Mastodon count for 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters they really are.

However, you need to include https:// at the beginning of links to make them clickable.
