@mwl Genuine question: How do you get these guys to NOT bite you? I had a bastard of a hamster growing up who bit every time, and now my son has expressed interest in getting one of these and that has sent PTSD shivers down my spine.

Hamsters are evil. Seriously, they're total bastards, every one of them.

Rats? You let them come to you. Somewhere between dogs and cats. Introduce slowly, then they grow to trust you.

So if the relationship between humans and rats are a reflection of the human, that must mean the relationship with a hamster just proves they're pure spawns of satan.

You do have variations by temperament, of course.

When we decide to get more rats, we go visit the litter and let them pick us. Someone doesn't want to talk to us, they're a poor fit. The one who runs up your arm and starts grooming your hair? They're a keeper.

Hamsters aren't evil, they are simply not social animals and should have never been taken out of the wild as pets. If they bite it's because they don't want to be held and want to be left alone. So yeah, don't take hamsters as pets!

Rats on the other hand are social animals and like to be around humans.

Fair.

My view might be colored by working my way through college in a big box pet department. (tip: don't buy there, don't work there, just don't )
